i just rang BT about this and was told that as i have broadband im not eligible for this sceam i thought it said on the info about this that you could have broadband and still get the saving
Tiscali do a scheme where line rental is actually free as well as all calls to landlines, anytime, and your unlimited monthly DSL Broadband rate is £14.99 for first 3 months I think...
    it's £19.99 after that
    http://www.tiscali.co.uk/products/talk/?code=ZZ-NL-11EE&srccode=COD_592

but you have to pay a one-off charge of £30

I've worked it out and that is soon recouped

we're on the £8.25 a month line rental with them [changed from BT when I realised they were £37 a quarter]
and we get the free landline calls, but the monthly DSL is £19.99 on this package...

so as soon as we can spare the £30 will change to the free line rental deal

The Line Rental and Calls are not FREE their included in the package price.

The £8.25 line rental is only normally offered to people who cant get the unbundled product.

Then of course theirs there expensive to contact and most unhelpful customer service to contend with.

Far from, "Stuff BT", I'd say whoever you spoke to was doing you a favour.

I agree with Heinz. The scheme is not intended for people who make a fair number of calls. You can cut your BT bills in other ways.

Bear in mind that connection/reconnection somewhere on the network or at the exchamge may have been the reason the charge was necessary.

The circumstances you describe are typical of a 'new build' - where the first occupant has to pay because, despite advance works by the builder (the internal wiring) and BT (the master socket), connection via the network and/or at the exchage has not existed previously.

Reconnection used to be £9.99

Those were the days ! :D

Reconnection of course did not apply to a new build connection.

Basic is a complete non starter for anyone making more than 20 calls or 20 mins of calls in a 3 month period who are currently on the light user scheme, due to the 10p/min plus 3p connection fee per call.

This is replacing the light user scheme, which was available to everybody.

BT are going to make massively on this, whilst packaging it like its to
    help the less well off.

BT advisors do ask customers questions about their usage and advise them not to sign up where appropriate.

Yes. It's not intended for people who regularly use their telephone to make calls. Instead of paying £40 per quarter they'll be paying less than £15 per quarter. It's a bargain for those it is intended for. It's a non-starter for those it is not designed for. Why is this such a complicated idea?

If you want competition for call charges then this is the consequence. BT may no longer charge a fraction extra for calls to cross-subsidise connection/reconnection. If you want your freedom for cheap calls and call packages you can not have cheap connections.
