Yet another case of BT giving with one hand and taking from the other one!!!

Call charges will be 10p per minute on this tariff!!!!

That's more expensive than using a mobile phone!

My mum a pensioner just had her phone installed and cost her almost £140 I carried on as there was a line in the house, but they would have none of it, I'm ringing up tomorrow for an application form.

Did BT charge your mum an installation fee despite there already being a line to the property? At any time did BT have to enter your mum's premises to do any work on the line/box?

I'm having a similar battle with them at the moment after they charged someone full installation fee (£124.99) yet never even entered the premises as the line and box was already installed

Bear in mind that connection/reconnection somewhere on the network or at the exchamge may have been the reason the charge was necessary.

The circumstances you describe are typical of a 'new build' - where the first occupant has to pay because, despite advance works by the builder (the internal wiring) and BT (the master socket), connection via the network and/or at the exchage has not existed previously.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Well if they can do it for people on benefits, why cant they offer it to everyone ?

Because they make a loss on it.
  • Pity it doesn't cover those on disability benefits - wonder what the rationale behind that is?

at the mo i pay 10.50 line rental(sometimes increased to cover caller display) barely £1 a quater to primus
    and around £5 a quater to 1899

i quite like kmowing i can sit on phone for just 5p conection

What relevance are all these posts? The tariff is not intended for those who frequently make long outgoing calls.

Do they check continuously if you are still receiving the benefits?

ie if you sign up for this, and then stop getting the benefit say 3 months later, what happens?

    Cheers, Des.

Possibly because even a light user is likely to get caught out with much higher call charge bills than they're used to on this tariff. They will only get 15 minutes per month calls included and the rest are charged at 10p per minute.

For this to work out cheaper than BT's current charges you are limited to a max 75 minutes of calls per month :comfused:

Yes, you have to give them your NI number which they cross reference with DWP database.

If I were living alone this would have been perfect for me. As it is, I'm not and my friend actually uses the phone for calling people, so it would quickly become more expensive than staying on the normal line rental (I only use the phoneline for ADSL).

It probably won't help many people, but it may help a few.
