Or indeed use your own domain with a Gmail account.

All fair comments!

My setup is actually domain > ISP and the ISP mail is accessible via POP or webmail. In fact, I have some domain addresses which autoforward to 2 different POP addresses - one work domain, one home ISP - because my workplace doesn't allow access to webmail services.

It's worth checking, before subscribing, whether the domain provider allows multiple forwarding. Some certainly don't. Mine does.
• Just a thought ...... but Virgin might let you keep your e-mail address for a small fee.

I moved from BT to Sky a few months ago and BT let me keep my e-mail address for a fee of £1.50 per month. They call this Premium Mail. My family think I am being ripped off but I'm happy with the deal.

I hope you're thinking longer term though. Otherwise you're shooting yourself in the foot, paying simply just to have a single email address, which is something you can get for free. For £1.50 a month you could actually afford many of your own domain names and point them to a free address. Each one capable of forwarding an infinite number of addresses at that domain.

£1.50/month gets you one email name@bt.com

about 30p/month or less gets you infinite number of addresses anything@yourname.co.uk

I think I have to agree with your family.

I've got to agree with Superscaper, paying £1.50 a month for an email address is OK for a month or two while you sort out your email but it's not a good idea long term.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

I switched from Virgin to Sky a year ago. I never deleted the ntl account details from my Outlook client and I can still receive mail sent to my ntl address! So yours may not get switched off straight away either. I am not able to send mail using hte ntl account though. But I agree with previous posters too, Googlemail is a very good service and you will keep the same address even if you switch from Sky in years to come.

Yes, fine until Google decide to start charging for it. And then you are just in the same position you were seeking to avoid.

The only guaranteed way to have the same address forever is to purchase your own domain.

Can't see that happening really. Google get plenty already for their ad revenue, so their business strategy already works and what you're suggesting is a complete restructuring of how the company itself operates. And googlemail's already been around a long time. I've still got gmail addresses from the personal invite only days, about as long as I've had my own domains.
