Morning all. We're moving from virgin to Sky and silly me had only just clicked that I will have to change my email address which ended ntlworld. I have loads of emails which I keep for reference and could do without losing them Plus I'm on the list of lots of companies about offers etc. Is there any easy way of switching without losing all my existing emails. I think our sky becomes functioning tomorrow and our virgin gets cut off on Friday. thanks for any help

What I would suggest is that you set up one or more web based (eg yahoo, hotmail, gmail) accounts then you will have to go to each company you have dealings with and change your account details so that the next time you change ISP you'll only have to worry about personal mail.

As for old emails - if they have been downloaded to your computer then they will still exist after you get cut off. If not then get them downloaded somehow

There'll always be some you miss. I slowly transferred every site I came across and remembered from my ISP to my personal ones over the course of an entire year. And then at the end went through my entire email archive. Even then after a few years I'm still finding some that I didn't transfer over. At least it's all done now and on addresses that as far as I'm concerned I'll be keeping forever no matter my ISP or the whims of companies.

The method I use is to buy a domain name which only costs a few pounds a year. For example you could buy melb.co.uk then you use melb@melb.co.uk as your email address and you then re-direct that to your virgin or sky account. That way if you change ISP's you make one simple change and your sorted. Not a lot of use for you at the moment but worth bearing in mind at the moment.

There's not a lot you can do at the moment other than logging onto the various websites you're registered with and changing the email address.

You may not lose the email address immediately, some ISPs are a bit tardy in closing the email account side of things. Using a gmail etc type account is a pretty painless way to go in this sort of situation.

Definitely the longer term solution is to have an email address that isn't tied to your ISP. G-mail and so on is one route, I personally have my own domain, as above.

Your ntlworld email address will probably still be active for a short while once you've switched away from them, but I don't think there's any way of avoiding going to each site you're signed up to and updating your details. At least you can make sure that this time is the last time you have to do it!

Tesco closed me out the same day, completely petty. Even the webmail won't work.
It would have been possible to change the account to pay as you go, but they don't tell you that until after.
Make sure all the emails are changed before you are cut off, as you can't even get the password reminders from other websites after.

Another advantage of the domain approach is you can have lots of email addresses and use them for different purposes. So you cna have one for friends and family, one for ebay, one for facebook etc. That way you can easily filter and organise your mail.

Domain is definitely the better way to go. Webmail is pants IMHO.

With a domain which forwards, you can use Outlook/Outlook Express/whatever and keep the e-mails on your PC, not on some server somewhere which might lose them for you.

They're not mutually exclusive though. I use my own domain and can also access it with its' own webmail when I'm not using my computer. Conversely you can download the likes of GMail/Googlemail to Outlook etc.
