Virgin were charging us for 20Mbit and we were only getting 2mb when I did one of those online tests. Rang them, they sent a new modem and now I can get 10mb so downgraded package to 10mb.

I can't say I notice it being any better now but pc does have a bit of a virus at the moment. They did explain that the wireless router (sp?) we have affects the speed we receive aswell. I might downgrade again to 2mb.

Many routers have chipsets that doesn't allow the full 20Mbit through-put in total, others can't sustain more than 8 - 10Mbit on each port, not so bad if you have two full use PCs and therefore get 10Mbit each, but if one is off mostly, then you are losing 10Mbit most the time.

Speedtest sites are also unreliable because you don't know how many people are connecting to the speedtest site at the same time, therefore affecting the speed they can send data out at.

Best thing is to download 3 or 4 files at the same time from: http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/ and add together the download speed.

If you have more than one PC then you really should be looking at 10Mbit or more.

It is my firm belief that all domestic users should downgrade or stick to a 2mb line becuase that is plenty, its all they need, its generally all that the wider network can service and anything else is simply marketing from ISPs to get your dosh unde false pretences backed up by a lack of understanding as to how networks work by the wider public. Downgrade now i say..

Can I ask for some really basic advice please?

I have been with Virgin for years and when I first switched to them they did not offer wi fi so I am using my own router (a Linkskys). Do they now supply wi fi routers and is it worth trying to blag one from them as every time i phone to complain about speed or connection I am told that it must be my router and as it isn't theirs they can't help me.

I am currently paying £17.99 a month for supposedly 8mg but am usually only getting about 1mg or less.

Also, as I am getting ppor speeds is there any benefit and cost saving in downgrading?

I see you are an Virgin.net ADSL customer and not a Virgin Media Cable customer, you might be able to blag a router, not as easy as it is from Virgin Media as Virgin.net is still run separately and as it has to use the BT network, there is little room for movement.

Digital Dave sells reconditioned netgear wireless routers cheap via his website, he also sells on ebay, I recently bought a Rangemax Netgear Cable DSL 108MBS router from him via a ebay non buy it now for 26.00 delivered, it is immaculate.

I realise you will require a ADSL router, he sells them reconditioned, I also have a Netgear 108mbs ADSL router that im no longer using due to switching to Cable/ DSL. ;)

Virgin Media charge 40.00 for a non rangemax wireless router for people who only take the M package ( up to 2meg) and give them free to people who take higher cost packages.

It is quite confusing for some as some people think DSL means cable.

In fact they are the two competing services in the UK.

ADSL is a type of DSL as is SDSL.

The reason why cable routers also say DSL is they can be used on DSL lines such as ADSL, SDSL etc etc, however unlike the routers you advertised as ADSL Modem/Routers, they don't include a modem in them, so for them to work on cable you use the cable modem too and to use them on ADSL or other DSL you need a DSL (ADSL etc) modem that connects via Ethernet.
