    1) Install a keylogger, agree with yourself that you will only ever look at the output if something bad happens, respect her privacy that much at least.

    2) Realise that with access to the internet she can and probably will eventually get to do anything she wants, you should know this yourself, doing a google search for "how do I hack x" will give you plenty of results whatever X happens to be

    3) Sit her down and have a frank exchange of views, tell her why you are worried, explain the issues, explain the possible outcomes of poor behaviour online, etc

    4) Stop looking for a technical solution, the problem is inherently a behavioural one, treat her with respect and ask for the same in return. If you need to be looking over her shoulder then you've both lost.

    5) Realise that if shes determined enough she will get to do what she wants, live with it and work with her instead of against her.

    Simple solution - LiveCD.

    Job done.

At the end of the day this really is a losing battle - what, specifically, are you worried about?

    Why do I bother.

I too am quite curious about exactly what you are trying to block her access from exactly?

Not to say that you shouldn't, that is your decision as her parent, but you keep saying that she can't be trusted - has she been researching how to make bombs or started gambling or something?

Not meaning to be sarcastic but do you have all day for me to explain? Just a worried parent, mentioned some of it but would rather not mention the rest.

i have dansguardian installed on my smoothwall express 3 firewall and since dansguardian scans all pages before they reach the computer, it will block any page with the proxy in it, providing you put proxy in the banned phase list.

the downside is that you will need another computer with 2 network cards installed and a bit of knowledge on networking and linux commands. also, the computer running smoothwall must be switched on everytime that you want to access the internet

My friend set up a proxy of his own featuring no mention of the word "proxy" anywhere on it? Blocking bypassed...

Your name (UnixGirlUK) is quite ironic here :p

Basically - a LiveCD allows you to run Linux (an operating system - like Windows, but different) from a CD in the drive (i.e. leaves no traces behind ;) ) and of course when your running a different OS nothing you've installed will actually run (i.e. your blocking or key-logging software).

I have spent the last 5 years at a School with an "overactive" filtering system to say the least and have tried every trick in the book...

EDIT - In case you don't get the joke - Unix is an operating system off which Linux is based - if you didn't choose it for this reason it's ironic, if you did then i'm patronising you - sorry!

On Topic - you have to have an element of trust here - i've had the same thing from my parents (i'm 17 atm), including my Dad using my PC while I slept to read my emails (and then bragging to me about doing it for months while drunk) because I chose to make friends with people over the internet - i'd spoke to them for years, seen them via webcam, even phoned them and would let my Dad talk to them if he wanted to, but he was somehow convinced that it had to be a peadophile who'd constructed 15 people and videos / live feeds of them etc for years just to lure me in.

In short - ask her to remove personal details and use a psuedonym on t'interweb and hope she listens. And do not let her have a webcam (the chances of her.... doing anything may well be small but do you really want a video of your daughter being spread across the internet?)
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.

dansguardian scans the page against several block/allow lists before it is passed to the client. for example, if it detects a word in the bannedphaselist file (eg proxy) it will block any page with proxy in the coding (including genuine ones like theaa.com and the RAC site unless you have them in the allowed sites list) and display the dansguardian block page

Can you explain that LIVE CD a little more Jakg? Im a tad older and quite well up on computers but youve lost me a little with how that all works!
Once the cds in and running, what then? You said none of the programs work? So you run a browser off the disc? And if so how does that stop her getting on whatever sites she wants?

***EDIT*** ~ ive just realised you ment to get PAST the security! (DUH!)
So am I right? Theres a browser on the disc? Could I just put it into my vista machine, boot up and it would load?
    Cheers mate :)

Your quite right about the webcam ~ theres sites RIFE with pics and vids 'stolen' of said nature.

On the other end of the stick, I think everyone should bare in mind the OP is clearly not computer 'savvy' (Unlike her daughter!), and so id suggest keeping the suggestions a tad more simple. People are putting ALL sorts of suggestions up and even im struggling keeping track of whats what.
