Take a March 2007 onwards BMW 5 series for a test drive (520d or 525d for a bit more refinement) and then make your own mind up which one is more fun.

So long as they're both autos, they'll both hold their value well. That age of Mercedes is much much better built than anything between 1995-2003.

Personally I would go for the diesel based purely on the mileage that you do, and the fact that Mercedes diesel engines are very well regarded. I know of an E300TD on 450,000 miles with no engine work.

Do not buy a manual Mercedes btw. You'll never be able to sell it.

We have an A6 avant (auto), it's a stunning car, I would highly recommend it.

I do appologise, I love the looks of Audi's and keep test driving them only to be so dissappointed by the driving experience. It's like a beautiful leggy blonde who turns out to be bad in bed, such a tease.

At the risk of stereotyping, I'd say go with what your girlfriend wants, Mercedes Benz are usually perceived as having greater status amongst Asian ethnic groups than Audi, BMW, etc., and I'm sure her dad would be happier if he knows his daughter's boyfriend is a fine upstanding fellow with a Mercedes in the drive, and not some loudmouthed ignorant boy racer that is often associated with those other makes.

Of the two, I would definitely get the diesel version, there's very little difference in performance, but noticeably better fuel economy.
