Norwich & Peterborough Building Society have an E-Saver giving 6.30% which includes a conditional bonus at the end of 12months.
    Doesn't pay monthly interest though.

Opened very easily and quickly online and they don't require ID documents to be sent.
I've just looked on their web site and they seem to be insisting on 2 forms of ID to be sent in the post, for current accounts. Maybe savings accounts are treated differently.
I'm very interested in this at the moment, because I'm trying to open up an additional current account and a new savings account. I got to the form filling-in stage with a combined savings/current account with Coventry B.S. this morning only to find that I had no official means of proving who I am, other than sending my passport away.

It seems that I have to commit a bank robbery before I'm recognised. I'd speed to the scene, putting points on my licence which would have to be updated by a photo ID replacement one. I'd have applied for a shotgun licence to get something to hold up the bank, which is also handy. Then with the proceeds from my haul I might become a 40% tax payer and the Inland Revenue would bother to write to me again. Otherwise I'll have to wait until I get my State pension, so I've got a little book that says who I am.
Together with the fact that energy companies only seem to want to send out bills once a year and that's the ones that haven't gone green and send their bills out on-line.
I'm having difficulty proving who I am at a distance.
I will probably do the non-green but easier approach and travel 15 miles to the nearest N&PBS branch, passport in hand.

    Skronk,

Sorry, I was responding to Steeve, who seemed to have a different experience with B&B to me, rather than disagreeing with you. Frankly it would be quicker to walk down to the High Street to open an account.

Yup, I wasn't asked for any documents after filling in the details online, account opened & initial £1 (just to check it all works) transfer made.

Ah, I only wanted an E-Saver with N&PBS and didn't need to send ID.

I too went through the process of filling in the form on Coventry BS website, mine was for an E-Saver. It was only after I printed the form off that I saw in the top right hand corner 'ID Required'.
I emailed them and pointed out that it should be quite possible to carry out the ID verification electronically, online. They said that they usually could and would only request documents if it wasn't possible ie- if I'd moved addresses frequently or recently.
Well, sent off my form and cheque for £10.00 on Saturday, to open an account. If they then contact me and ask for ID documents, I will ask them for my cheque back, as I too will not send documents through the post. Niether originals nor copies!
If the envelope contained the application form with my personal and bank details on and my ID docments and it were to be intercepted en route, talk about open to fraud.

B&B Internet Saver was easy, applied, opened online, then got sent a single letter with some sign in details.

IF needs to have forms sent back to them (plus id if they ask)

Both should be Monthly interest, B&B lists it directly, and IF lets you chose when opening.
B&B was easy, passport number being accepted and as you say followed by a single letter. But it was a while before the direct debit was setup so I could transfer some dosh.

I've opened a Saga Online Top 5 Tracker Account. I did that 10/10/08. I got 4 letters in the same post, three being duplicates of one another. I had to send a cheque in from the same account as I'd set as the linked account so it could be authenticated. I posted that 16/10/08. After that I'm supposed to get another welcome letter to include a username and an Access Token will be emailed. Then I can log in and use the account. I see the DD has been set up (with Birmingham Midshires!) though my opening cheque doesn't show as cleared. I'd say a bit over the top. Mind you if it all happens tomorrow then fine - not so bad!

Kaupthing Edge, took a couple of days for it to be opened after I applied online.
It seems that the Kaupthing Edge web site is no longer accepting new applications.

If you try following any link you might find that's got anything to do with applying for a new account, it just takes you to the "IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT ..." page.

If you already have a Kaupthing Edge easy saver account, you can still buy new term deposits with it - even though withdrawing money is a bit hit and miss at the moment. These term deposits are still fairly competitive in my opinion.
    :p
  • I opened the B&B e-saver a couple of weeks ago, I was sent a single letter which said there was meant to be a leaflet enclosed too which there wasn't.

Post just popped through the letterbox. Coventry BS have sent back my application form and cheque and a request for two ID documents to be included when I send the form and cheque back.

They'd better not hold their breath. ;) Not that for a minute, do I think they will.

    Are there banks that offer;
    • Decent interest rates
    • Decent service
    • Instant access
    • Easy opening?
As I recall, KE were rather good at all four but sadly no more (No, I didn't move my money in time!)

    Likewise, so were Icesave!

I'd second the B&B recommendation. I'm surprised you had trouble with them. My account was all done online within 5 mins, and in 2 working days I'd got my login details and confirmation in the post.

My experience with B&B was not so good I'm afraid.
I spent ages online filling in my passport and driving licence details (amongst other stuff) but at the end of the process they want the originals by post.

I tried to apply for a B&B esaver this morning, and went through all the rigmarole referred to above, got to the end (almost) where you have to input the details of a linked bank account, and the system did not recognise my bank account details  . It is an ordinary A&L current account that I have had for years, and I tried several times, and checked and double checked but what I had put was correct in every detail. I finally gave up, as I couldn't be bothered to ring their call centre and be put on hold for ages, and probably not get anywhere anyway! I do worry though what happens to all this information that just disappears into the ether.
