As the customer paid for a service that PC World didn't supply then certainly the customer is due back any fees that were paid for the service.

The fact that the photos have now been lost is not a fault of PC World, unfortunately this data should have been backuped by the customer independently.

As already suggested, a data recovery specialist is an avenue worth investigating,

Nowhere did the OP say he paid for said service - thus why I asked.

Again - your data, your responsibility (i.e. if they just gave you a brand new PC as a replacement it would be more than fair, even though your data wasn't on it)
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.

So where's the hard drive now?

What did PCWorld do that means the files are lost forever?

Most likely re-installed the OS - the files aren't neccesarily lost, but not cheap to recover.

If they've done a full format of the HD he's stuffed.

Even after a format it is possible to recover some files though - although the amount and the price varies a lot.

Surely he hasn't had the same computer for 10 years? Almost certainly not, so he must have transferred them a few times form 1 computer to another.

Absolutely correct, as you allude to - the price starts to get steeper from here though.
  • The problem here is that the OP took the PC to PC World. Ha ha
  • You have to wonder how someone without the PC knowledge to back up his files managed to have digital photos from 10 years ago (very infant stages) and transfer the data between a few PCS

Me thinks someone is either exaggerating or on a scam
