PC World Lost Files
ish
My friend took the PC into PC World because it wouldn't load up. He also wanted a backup of all his files and photos and on the form he clearly written where all the files stored so it could be backed up. He has a copy of that form. They backed up everything except his photos which are thousands (roughly 10gb). These photos cannot be replaced. He feels bad not backing up earlier but he told PC World to back it up. They say they don't have the photos and they couldn't do anything. What should he do? btw he really is angry they lost it because it contains photos for the last 10 years e.g. weddings, friends, babies, family etc...

Well it depends
did they forget to back up the photos or did the fault prevent them backing it up?
If its the former he can ask for compensation, but what is his financial loss? none so any gesture would be goodwill at most, possibly ask for the fee to be refunded
If its the latter then they cannot be expected to work miracles0 -
They forgot to. Nothing prevented them from backing up. Obviously no amount of money will replace his photos but what should he ask for. Of course he will ask for his fees to be paid back. How much can he ask for compensation? I still can't believe they didn't back it up because we emphasised the part where the photos need to be backed up and it was written clearly.LinasPilibaitisisbatman wrote: »Well it depends

Just about sums pc world up, why not try a local repair company in the first place?
He'll have paid through the nose to have the fault sorted in the first place.
Id say £50 on top of the fees refunded.£80 in boots vouchers from pigsback.com - Balance: 820pp£15 in paypal from Lightspeed + £30 Halfords Vouchers£36.20 earned from onepoll so far£40 Tesco Vouchers - Valued Opinions:beer:0 -
Did you actually pay for a data backup (£30?) if not then you have no standing as most likely you were relying on the CA telling the Tech Guy to make sure to do it (i.e. to make sure he read the booking sheet).
Either way it's your data and if it's so precious you probably should of taken more care of it.Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0 -
Your friend could try a company such as this if the photos are precious to him.

PC World technicians do actually have the ability to do an in-store data recovery. If he genuinely did insist on those files being backed up, it might be worth asking that they do that to get his data back.0

So your friend had almost ten years of photos on his hard drive, of sentimental value. Ones which they cherished so much that he never thought to back up themselves?
If they have it in writing that they paid for backup of the files, and PC World failed to do so, I would suggest that they were entitled, to there fee back. As it seems that PC World have not provided the full scope of works which was apparently requested.
The loss of the photos and there value, which is open to debate is circumstantial. A goodwill gesture at best.My farts hospitalize small children

The clue here is: "because it wouldn't load up"
See hard disc issues leading to lost files.
See people who don't bother back up their files trying to blame everyone else...
See compensation culture.

Quite right. PCWorld are however a bunch of f***wits.
Still, they can't be blamed for the fact he lost all his photos. Ultimately it's down to the fact he never bothered backing them up himself.0
