  • I know this is a very old thread but just thought i'd let u guys know i got the router and opted for the Dell Inspiration 9400. All was going well and tried to hook everything up until i found out i had to wire up the router to a network card in my PC.

What Network card?? LOL I Did say i was thick and asked from the beginning what i'd need! LOL I looked at network card being mentioned but that was on with the printer not the PC or i missed that bit!(sorry if ai did)

Anyhow, what i need now from u helpful chaps and lasses is advice on which network card i should go for, where from and how much.(just had a brief look round and presume they will all work with my PC and Netgear DG834G router?)

    Thanks again!! :)

I very much doubt if you will need a network card. Just get the cable supplied with your router and look on the back of your PC for a socket to plug it into. The chances are that there will only be one suitable socket.
 Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:
  • As expresso says, you will have a ethernet network card built-in (which you can use with the blue cable in the router box)

Are you talking about a wireless network card? Does the laptop have that built-in? it should be listed on your order, or in control panel, networks
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

By Dell Inspiration 9400 you mean Dell Inspiron 9400 :rotfl:

That's the top of the range model with built in Intel Pro 2200BG wireless. Your desktop, if it's less than two years old, will almost certainly have onboard networking capabilities, i.e you don't need a dedicated network card.

I reckon you already have everything you need.

Any advice that you receive from me is worth exactly what you paid for it. Not a penny more or a penny less.
  • The Dell Inspiron 9400 has both wireless and wired network adapters. See Technical Specs.

As for your PC, it's quite likely that it has wired network capability, either as a separate network card or built in to the motherboard. Look for an RJ-45 socket on the back of the PC. It looks like a larger version of a telephone socket and has 8 pins:

  • Thanks for the help so far!

My PC is 3 or more years old and trust me doesn't have the socket for the cable to go into! :(

So guys, network card? where from and how much cheapness can i get one for! :)

    Cheers
  • LOL I said i was thick, not thicker than thick!!

I know the laptop(Inspiration sounds a better name!lol)has a built in one, it's my PC than needs one! ;) LOL

So any general one from ebuyer will work then? :) No different speeds or anything i need to know?
  • Well several people have posted stuff about the laptop having a card in, and you didn't respond to them, we can't read minds..

Yes, any will do, they should all be 10/100 speed nowadays. or you could get a wireless one
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • Thanks i was only joking!

Really do appreciate all the help! :)
