Connecting wireless laptop and PC

Hi,

I'm after some simple advice on how i will connect my new Dell laptop upto my current desktop and connect to the internet!

Currently i have my Desktop downstairs and hooked up with a USB modem on 1 gig BB.

Which Router is the best to buy(where from and how much?) so i can go wireless free with my new laptop but still exchange data with my desktop. How fast will the laptop be for downloading?

Also what wires if any will i need to install the router and how does it hook up??

Sorry for all the questions but i'm a bit thick so any answers must be easy for thicko's to read and follow!! lol

Many thanks

  • Hi,

Go for a Netgear Wireless router modem. They are very easy to set up and increadibly stable. If you are going wireless make sure that you set up an encryption protocol to stop people connecting to your network. You can pick up a Netgear Wireless router modem for about £60 on Amazon.

You will probably need to connect your pc to the router with an ethernet cable (normally provided) and then connect the router to the telephone line.

If you have a software based firewall you might have problems connecting the laptop to the router wirelessly. The router has two firewalls on anyway so you shouldn't have a problem. As for sharing files between the pc's simply go to the directory you want to share, right click and choose "sharing and security" the rest should be straightforward from here. And there we go.

    Hope it all goes well!!!!!!

  • The laptop wireless speed (at least 11Mb/s, poss 54 or higher) will exceed your internet speed by far, so the limitation on internet download speed is your broadband speed..

NeilB's post answers your points. If you need more details, can I suggest you read all other posts in the forum about wireless, routers, and security (V. important!), as this question has been asked (in different ways), and answered, numerous times..

A Netgear DG834 54Mb/s should suffice, don't waste money on a 108 Mb router, unless you can get a good deal on it.., it won't make your broadband (0.5-8Mb/s usually) any faster.

If you have any problems setting it up, post back ..
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Thanks for the replies so far, i've already looked at some of the topics on Wireless and to be honest quite a bit of it is over my head! (i did say i was thick!)

Anymore advice for simple-tons!!! would be gratefully received! :)
  • I set up a wireless network today and I am a simple-ton, I purchased a netgear dg834g from currys at £69 and it was really simple, just insert the disc and follow the instructions, I have two desktops and lappie connected and it took 2 minutes to do. Just connect the router to your phone line and desktop with the cable provided insert the disc and follow the intructions, your lappie will detect your router and off you go!!

The router also came with a free usb adaptor, as my daughter didn't have a wireless network card installed I just plugged it in ran the software and she is also wireless

    Thanks all! :)

Have a look at this. Ebuyer has a reputation of low prices. I'd also consider their cheapest option, Linksys is a sub-brand of Cisco, the world's leader router manufacturer. It should be a very good router and easy to setup too.

I personally use a Safecom SWAMRU-108 with built-in print server, bought @ £45 at Ebuyer.

Hope there still time for you to make a few savings....

    Cheers
  • Thanks pardal, i was ordering from Amazon then realised u have to add VAT so made it dearer and never bother.

Can u use the printer with the netgear model or is it just the linksys that shares that??
  • Anyone got the answer::
