I may be affected, but only if we go it all gets much worse than it is now.In IT, my employers are either operating in a parallel universe or know something no-one else does...
After 6 years with just one 3% pay rise, this month I got 6%...couldn't find anything during the so called boom, but can as we enter recession?!?
Lovely timing after recent inflation, but you have to wonder if they are a sandwich short of a picnic...
As they are threatening 25% redundancies at the same time...
Confused? They certainly are.Hi, we've noticed that you don't have a signature to remove. If you're not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you are feeling left out.0 -

Depends on your skill set. If you have what they need, they will pay if they feel they might lose you.
Remember, even in a recession most people actually keep their jobs (just as people still get made unemployed in a boom). It's just that job losses reach such an extent that most people have reason to be fearful and they know that if they did lose their job, they'd have a tough time finding a new one probably.
Oh yeah, and this time around an awful lot of people are carrying large amounts of debt which they have to worry about - specifically mortgage debt which could result in them losing their house as well as their job.--
Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.0 -
No, I have no fears about job security.neverdespairgirl wrote: »Liquidators? Receivers?
My Sister's a forensic accountant. Their part of the company is overun at the moment!0 -
I may be affected, but only if we go it all gets much worse than it is now.I think conspicuous consumption and flaunting 'wealth' may finally be on the way out at last, now that many of the supposedly well off people were revealed to be swimming without any bathing costume.
well it seems in my circles, job security is the new flash asset to flaunt. There's definitely a note of change in TV programming, C4 had something on the other night about doing up your home to make it a nicer place to live, not worth more. And of course they banged on about how 'home' is more important than wealth at the start of it :rolleyes2
A year ago it would have been framed as how to add tens of thousands of quid of value onto your house.
Yes I commented on this last week. Very clever of C4 I think. Satisfies the (I believe) still strong desire to watch programmes about the home, but with a more contemporary premise. Similarly, I also thought to myself that in days of yore, an 'expert' would have been hauled in to confirm how much value had been added. Sign of the times indeed. I think programmes like this still serve to fuel my renting friends' desire to own their own home though.0 -
No, I have no fears about job security.Strange that most people here seem to consider their job is safe, despite what is banded about the forum!0

No, I have no fears about job security.I put no fears, not only because I work p/t but we are short staffed. Over the past 3 months we have become much busier than usual and will probably stay that way as xmas is looming - I work for a supermarket.0

I may be affected, but only if we go it all gets much worse than it is now.His longtime mate drummed with a very well known band for years (+ bands like The Who etc for Live 8) ....
BTW.....we only had two people at our ''wedding'', one of whom is the of someone who was a sometime drummer for the Who (but I don't think this one has ben divorced, I don't know, but he has a LOVELY and talented family)0 -

Well then, that was possibly Kenney or Simon, neither of whom I liked in that role, but Zak is a perfect substitute for 'the drummer they could never replace.' Soooo much better than his dad!
Hmmmm, but a replacement bassist......I sit & watch my 2002 Teenage Cancer Fund Concert every other week and realise that, just as we've had Peak Oil, we've had Peak Who too.
I'm talking drivel of course, but this is a very nice bottle of wine......!0 -
I feel my job is at risk as a direct result of current economic conditions. My brother earns a good living from being composer/producer/DJ. Took 8 years of earning nothing (supported by his partner back then) then got the 6 fig advance.
However, changing times...no more royalty cheques from CD sales etc. Had to gig constantly but has had some lucky stuff with film soundtracks.

I've been making dance music for 20 years and only just getting good (its so much harder than people realise to make new sounding professional toons, even getting the kick drum sound right can take me weeks of work).
Recently I've been invited to provide 5 songs to a record co, for release in Germany, but nothing guaranteed and a way to go yet.
Not much money in it though, even if you get a fairly big hit with 100,000 sales, the eventual returns are nothing much as far as I can tell.
I can put up a link to my latest number:eek: - but Im thinking most here are old rockers so will hate it.
Dammm missed a great gossip thread.
I quoted Conrad...wot a dark horse
...I knew there was a bit of entrepreneurial, creative spirit hidden in there somewhere...desperate to create...but trapped by the immediate needs of providing for family...am I right??
Phirefly...Fashion/art/graphics.design...never been an easy career but when it goes well it's great. The highs compensate for the lows (when one is skint and the trends move away from your instinct for a while...but then they catch up.....and on it goes again).
Mr DT...go on Gavs My space..send a message and you can get a download of a track...he's up to his eyes in it at the mo...just moved house, 2 toddlers and no childcare but he always picks up meassages and sorts out requests.
Mind you, I am still waiting for my custom CD for the shop...and a copy of the new album...and I am family!!
I often get a bit of the ''Your so lucky'' stuff now....but, had we gone for the safe option (reg salary, PAYE job) then I wouldn't be in the postion of having the job with the creative freedom that gets me up every morning....and those that say that, well...they weren't there when things were dire.
It's like a zig zag. Up and down every few years....been S/E for 23 yrs now
When the money flows in , one doesn't stick it in a savings account. You take the profits and invest in the next venture or in what you are currently doing....and sometimes you lose.
That's the risk...but one can't move forward if one just stacked the profit in an account.
The job evolves all the time, things change, ones industry changes and the rug can be pulled from under you at anytime.
The BEST bit is knowing that ones whole income is derived from an original (or plagiarised ) idea out of your own head/imagination...the hard bit is executing the idea into a product...and then getting it to enough customers who love it enough to spend ££ on it.
The above is also the dead stressy bit mind....a few family/child issues and the inspirations just waft away and it takes a lot of will power to catch them again.
FWIW, my recession survival plan is The mating Game....Trash frocks for 16-30....mating doesn't stop during a recession and the clothes are impt and will get spare ££ spent on them. Only snag is I can't live my brand at the mo (which I have always doen)...as I already did my mating....but got a 'retain mate' range in the pipeline...so just got to go with the flow really...or it'll be Oligopoly shelf filling for me:o0
