No, I have no fears about job security.
Work for a communications company that recently put 10,000 people on edge. I think my jobs secure as i am permanently employed and most people if offered redundency would take it.
  • I feel my job is at risk as a direct result of current economic conditions.
Following on from my last post in here, i am now on a sabatical programme on 80% pay until the middle of january.

It was too good to turn down im only loosing about 40 pound a week when i take out fuel it costs me to get there and back.

Just hope ive got a job when i go back, HR phoned me has i have been off on paternity since the begining of October and told me i had been accepted for the programme, and they also said it may be extended for another 3 months in January.

Its nice to have the time off, i just hope it picks up next year.

    confused

No, but Who freaks, like me, know who you mean!

P.S. I went to junior school with Moonie, but hardly remember him, as his sister was more interesting at that time!

    I've been Money Tipped!
I may be affected, but only if we go it all gets much worse than it is now.

My brother earns a good living from being composer/producer/DJ. Took 8 years of earning nothing (supported by his partner back then) then got the 6 fig advance.
However, changing times...no more royalty cheques from CD sales etc. Had to gig constantly but has had some lucky stuff with film soundtracks.

My OH used to drum with his old mate. OH had to go and get a 'proper' job, tried to keep it up but couldn't commit...the band did really well in the end.

His longtime mate drummed with a very well known band for years (+ bands like The Who etc for Live 8) ...but things change, Divorce, couldn't do all the gigs and be around enough for kids...but now he's doing other more exciting things that fit in wth family life.
He misses the royalty cheques too...pennies not £££ now.

Music industry used to be a path to riches (like banking) but it is changing fast.
Doesn't stop people making new music though.........

I did one days work :o last week in music industry (see, I'm multi talented, lol) and was grateful for a (modest) flat fee cheque. DH literally gets only a three figure sum royalties from cds (jazz:rolleyes: ) and little more from BBC royalties now -they used to be bigger. DH earned most of his music income through gigging, which is wildly variable. Its nicer now, I think, that there is no pressure to earn well and DH just enjoys the music and I just go to listen, lol.

Still, we met through through music, and that you can't put a price on. and prsonally, I think less mony is better for the art form.

I bought the Human Traffic soundtrack just for the one track - 'stalker', it's one of your brothers tracks. A snippet of it gets played in the jungle record shop scene, so I kinda assumed it'd be on the CD. I got home, put on the CD, checked the tracklisting on the back of the case, and realised that for some reason it wasn't on there! D'oh! :rotfl:

I am glad I am not employed and reliant on someone else for a job and I genuinely feel for the many who will lose their jobs through no fault of their own.

I quit my job in February to become self-employed. At the time, people said I was either brave or foolish - only one person disagreed, the accountant at my previous employers. She said I'd be more brave/foolish were I to stay on there. They went under a couple of weeks ago. It irks slightly that they can blame it on the economic climate rather than the real reason - utter management incompetence. As !!!!!! points out,

To be fair, a 'permanent' contract of employment doesn't really offer much security either. Maybe a bit of redundancy money at the end of it.
which would have been a spit in the ocean for me.

I feel as vulnerable as the next person, but far less so now I don't rely directly on anyone else to keep the business (and cash) flowing in my direction. I design for retail, so my employment security should be directly affected by the recession.

Conversely, the last fortnight has been unreal - I landed a prestigious new client, and have also been taken on a fixed term contract by one of the uk's largest and most established fashion retailers. I also had a meeting this morning with one of my long-term clients, Jamie Olivers fave supermarket, who are investing heavily in expanding non-food remit and have a mountain of work for me...

I'm finding that childrenswear is staying strong - kids will always grow out of their clothes and need new ones, while parents get that shopping fix via buying clothes for their kids, easier to justify than for themselves when funds are tight. So my strategy is to focus on this sector of the market - a trick my former employers missed.

All that said, I fully anticipate that it could dry up tomorrow. I feel in control, but not secure. And I'm certainly not bombarding my friends with the info above, in fact I positively play it down - which is more than I can say for some of them... which brings me to my next point...

Hs anyone noticed how ANNOYING some of their friends are being? My best mate is a project manager at Eon. He's positively smug. He recites their profit figures for the last quarter like anyone else would sing their favourite song. I love him to bits but its bringing out the worst in him. Mr. Phirefly's best friend is the same. He's an integrated intercomms salesman and lately has taken to calling Mr.P up on a regular basis to boast how busy he is and how business is booming. I would NEVER be so vulgar...

Amazed at the number of people who in general (not just this poll) seem to think they won't be affected at all in a recession

You should come round my house next time I have a cheese-up and witness the chest puffing and pontificating - then you'll be amazed.

Mr P has experienced it directly - he went for 2 jobs lately that he was very well suited for, only he didn't have clients ready to place orders lined up to bring with him as he was sidestepping industries... both companies said the same - they thought he was great and in all other aspects exactly what they were looking for, and 6 months ago they'd have taken him on without hesitation, but the way things are, they can't afford to take on someone who would be going out to find new bsuiness... At the moment his current employer is still recruiting and he himself is on a pittance, his basic is a mere blip on their P&L so fingers crossed he'll be ok for the time being....

Interesting thread btw and good that everyone is being so candid....

I've been making dance music for 20 years and only just getting good (its so much harder than people realise to make new sounding professional toons, even getting the kick drum sound right can take me weeks of work).

Recently I've been invited to provide 5 songs to a record co, for release in Germany, but nothing guaranteed and a way to go yet.

Not much money in it though, even if you get a fairly big hit with 100,000 sales, the eventual returns are nothing much as far as I can tell.

I can put up a link to my latest number:eek: - but Im thinking most here are old rockers so will hate it.

    Not sure.
    Congrats on your good luck.

I think conspicuous consumption and flaunting 'wealth' may finally be on the way out at last, now that many of the supposedly well off people were revealed to be swimming without any bathing costume.

There's definitely a note of change in TV programming, C4 had something on the other night about doing up your home to make it a nicer place to live, not worth more. And of course they banged on about how 'home' is more important than wealth at the start of it :rolleyes2

A year ago it would have been framed as how to add tens of thousands of quid of value onto your house.

Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.

Just had a 10% pay rise, back dated to July, and this followed a 18% rise in February of this year.... I am not concerned about my job and the company I work for is well managed and goes from strength to strength. Plus I work in the oil/gas/pharma industries, so things people "need", hopefully!

Still it is worrying seeing people lose their jobs. My dad works in construction/civils and things are slowing down for him.
