Yet a plurality of people who voted on the poll seem to think their job is safe.

It might be for some but for a majority of people, no way. Even though most people will keep their job, to think it's safe is just not realistic.

!!!!!!? I have explained why I believe my job will be safe and the company has just offered us an excellant pay rise and I am still getting loads of overtime.

I may be affected, but only if we go it all gets much worse than it is now.
OH is in the motor trade, and since less people are buying new cars, more are getting their old ones repaired, so his centre is breaking targets.

I voted 'may be affected but only if it gets much worse' because really, none of us know what's around the corner. Prepare for the worst and then you can be pleasantly surprised if it doesn't happen.

Dunno. I work for the NHS, and as such am theoretically fairly secure. In fact, I might even be more so, as global economic meltdown may distract central govt from further crazy schemes such as getting everyone to reapply for their own job on the same day via a computer system that doesn't work.

However, my wages come from taxation, and if the pot shrinks, who knows? I expect that the useless bvggers with clipboards and cheap suits will be ahead of me in the queue for the bin, but you never know.

Plus every time there's any hint of economic trouble we get a new influx of managers from "industry" who mysteriously start needing to do something "useful and worthwhile" with their skills at exactly the same time as "industry" decide they are no longer "useful or worthwhile".

    no job is secure

    not even in the nhs
NHS trust announces 600 job cuts

A North Yorkshire NHS trust is to axe 600 jobs - a third of its workforce - to try to save £10m, staff have heard.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/north_yorkshire/6904609.stm
Around 23,000 NHS posts and 2,600 beds have been axed in the past 18 months as a result of cost-cutting measures.

357 job losses in nhs ipswich http://www.suffolkhealthcare.com/C8-branchnews/redundancywatch.htm

nhs oxford job losses a few years ago http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article574099.ece

i bet there were and are a lot more nhs trusts planning redundancies and recruitment freezes etc to cut costs. not to mention nurse practitioners / surgical assistants filling on call rotas and theatre jobs normally done by doctors (aka getting airhostesses to fly planes as it will be cheaper than training or hiring pilots is the labour govts logic) and it will get worse with the skills escalator plan for people to escalate up the ladder (see witchdoctor blogspot and search skills escalator on there in case u r interested in what the skills escalator means- apparently labour seems to think class inequities can be broken by making a skills escalator and putting the hospital porter on this skills escalator and they will climb up from level 1 of the skills ladder to the top of the ladder or so labour would have u belive after spending millions on advice of quangos and advisors who came up with this bullsh1t skills escalator theory which is already in practise ie practitioners replacing doctors, nursing assistants replacing nurses, midewife assistants replacing midwifes, and the bin bag changer getting replaced by bin bag replacing assistant and the like and the public face the music. too bad the politicians will never be treated by the assistants, they always will get treated by senior consultants)

Have now answered on the other thread pickles.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Sorry to burst your bubble. In a recession there a less jobs, particularly in finance in the City. This means there will be significantly less commuters. Therefore, less trains will be required, meaning less drivers and signallers etc.
In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:

OH is a self employed musician - pretty recession proof as he doesn't really earn anything.

LOL, so was DH before the Law. He still plays, but usually doesn't take a cut from the money but weirdly has had lots of requests for him to play with people recently, but can't do ven half of them. Good luck to your OH! Its a nice career and lifestyle when it goes well.:)

My brother earns a good living from being composer/producer/DJ. Took 8 years of earning nothing (supported by his partner back then) then got the 6 fig advance.
However, changing times...no more royalty cheques from CD sales etc. Had to gig constantly but has had some lucky stuff with film soundtracks.

My OH used to drum with his old mate. OH had to go and get a 'proper' job, tried to keep it up but couldn't commit...the band did really well in the end.

His longtime mate drummed with a very well known band for years (+ bands like The Who etc for Live 8) ...but things change, Divorce, couldn't do all the gigs and be around enough for kids...but now he's doing other more exciting things that fit in wth family life.
He misses the royalty cheques too...pennies not £££ now.
I can't mention the band as too well known and not approriate to ID him....seeing as I'm gossiping.

Music industry used to be a path to riches (like banking) but it is changing fast.
Doesn't stop people making new music though.........
