I don't know what source they used. Mouseprice has 1900 for 2 houses on the same terrace and 1903 on another one. Would this be fairly reliable?

  • I own a property which I need to insure and am concerned that if I don't give a completely accurate construction date there could be problems if I ever needed to claim.
I can only get a construction date of 'about' 1977. If this is a couple of years out could there be problems?

I doubt it. In our case, our house is down as being built in 1861. In actual fact, it wasn't - we know it was actually here LONG before that, but in 1861 it was radically altered and became the village post office. No-one we have dealt with so far seems to find this a problem, however I am not an expert on this!
  • Many thanks dukesy.
I am just very aware that insurance companies use any excuse not to pay out and want to avoid any potential problems.
I guess I will have to stick with the approx date I have.

Make sure you let your proposed insurers know that you are guessing the date so that the onus is upon them to refute insurance now rather than later (ie when it matters).

Not supplying the correct information on the application form isn't the insurers problem. So not an excuse. Read the small print where you sign the form. It's called a declaration.

It seems somewhat dishonest of insurers to ask a question which the answer is virtually impossible to know or even find out...

  • I still came across it on Google.

I used old-maps.co.uk to narrow down the age of my house. You probably won't get it spot on but what a great tool!

The best information I've managed to find is from Old-maps.co.uk. Gave me around a 10 year window which is better than most other sources!

I need to find someone to do free cavity wall insulation, but British Gas said they don't do houses built after 1983. Thanks to you I've just found out our house was built in 1980 :T:T:T
