  • Please do not buy a King Charles and instead adopt one. I have never owned a King Charles but was a doggy sitter to a grand old lady called Trude. She had my hubby and I in stitches all of the time. She made the rudest noises poss and was quite happy walking and snorting in our garden. Trude lived with 2 Saint Bernards and 2 cats - think it was a relief to come here and stay where she was the centre of attention with no other animals around (the 2 Saint Bernards were jealous big hairy rotters to her - hubby and I had a soft spot for them as well). Trude has gone to doggy heaven but she stays in our hearts. Trude's owners lived in an upstairs flat so I don't see a problem with a ground floor flat. The 2 Saint Bernards - George and Murphy are also now in doggy heaven - poor Trude no peace for her still:rolleyes: Sorry useless post but you got me thinking of Trude so had to post. Forgot to mention Trude was rescued.

    Dear Ms UKTigerlily,

I am writing to you with regards to your request to keep a small dog in your property.

I can confirm that permission for 1 small dog is granted provided that you remain responsible for the pet and ensure that no fouling is allowed. Also, please note that if any complaints are made about the noise or dog fouling, I will have to withdraw this permission and you will have to re house the dog.

If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

    Yours truly,
    Mr K Gill

lol hope when they say no fouling is allowed they will be ok as long as it's cleared up right away. I think i'll take it to the park just in case though!

lol park is pretty much my garden lmao i'm 2 seconds from it. I'm all excited now even though I know it won't be till next year! lol I thought about the fouling thing & yeah they must just mean that cause all the cats don't pick theirs up do they lol they just dig it ! Gonna get my friend to start bringing her Boxer round to see the cat to get her used to dogs again tho I doubt she even bothers, she'll probably hiss & walk back to me lol

Yeah I got some lavendar bags from a £1 shop & they're still going now lolll when I walked the ex's Mum's dogs I used anything, carrier bags from Asda, whatever (Tho now I use my own shopping bags!). I decided to put my new savings account to use as a pet account & save about £1,000 first, plus a years pet insurance & also buy all it's gear first. Gonna get my mate round with her cat friendly Boxer Ollie so Podge the cat can adjust slowly lol

I'll make associating with the dog rewarding for her but not force her & give her her own high up places to escape. My Mum asked how she'd cope & said she'd be jealous, I said & I wasn't when she had my Brother? lol I remember trying to hurt him so many times!

I'm quite sure Podge will complain but adjust, she's lived with a Collie x & a JRT before. Once I get sorted saving abit & reading up more about various small breeds (Still want CKCS x or full) i'll put my name down with rescues, it'll definitely be a rescue & older. Gonna buy myself tons of books now & speak to my Aunt who has two to see how they are, might see if she can bring one over to to meet Podge, I know they're ok with cats as Aunt has a cat also.

Will PM the previous poster who has a book I can buy later, didn't want to yet in case they said no! Will also save up for vaccinations & microchipping & neutering in case any dog isn't done when I get him or her. Not in any rush but want to get some things sorted before going on a list in case they get one too quick! It won't be this year, hopefully soon as poss next year, which isn't too long. Gonna subscribe to Your Dog mag right off tho, I already get Your Cat & it's a great help.

So, now all your efforts of advising me haven't gone to waste, keep em coming! I will be wanting a CKCS or a CKCS x, or a similar sized rescue, good with cats, ok to be left or trained to be left about 4hrs, not a huge barker (Apparently CKCS don't bark alot, tho when I heard my Aunts bark I thought she had Rottis they were so loud!). Must like 2/3 up to an hr walks a day! Pet only, not for breeding.

So any adviceon other suitable breeds or dog care is welcomed! I really appreciate all the help you're all giving, and of course any money saving tips welcome, such as the bag one above. Already planning to buy Frontline Spot On from the internet if that's the best for dogs? I have a cat & she has FSO monthly which I buy online.

Will look in Charity Shops for things too, and definitely will go to dog training even if it's an adult until i'm used to how it is. Doesn't matter if the breed is good with kids or not there's never any here & never will be, but of course the friendlier the better! Do not want a Chihuahua type lol I want a real dog (No offence to Chi owners i'm sure they're lovely!) lol

I will! I just subscribed to Your Dog mag online, the first three issues are £3 yay. It will be the January 2009 issue first though at the beginning of December but that's ok. I always get Your Cat & always find helpful things in it & have had cats for 24yrs of my 30! Will go on a book buying spree soon and get some first aid, dog training & breed books aswell as general dog care. Luckily (As i don't drive) a Vet has opened up an hours walk away from me, also on the Bus route (Yay) as even though I can & will PDSA register the dog, I prefer to pay for treatment when I can!

Told my Dad tonight & he's like it'll be treated like royalty (I spent about £400 setting my rats up including a £180 cage from Italy  ) he's right! It will! I found a dog training club in the village also that runs all but the second week of each month.

I'm so excited I never ever thought I could have a dog yet!

I was thinking about you again the other day and thought perhaps a short haired dog might be the better for you in the set up you have right now. This was after coming in with my cocker who I have clipped short because his coat is a nightmare in the wet ( and this is N Ireland so its always wet). I need a couple of towels a day to dry him and even then he lies on the bed or sofa and soaks them. Personally I dont mind but then I have a lot more room to have smelly towels drying and my bedroom door can be closed and I have throws for the sofa. Just thinking how you might cope in just the one room? A short haired dog wouldn't pick up as much mud or get so soggy and will be easier dried off
