Gardener World tonight at 8.30pm BBC2

'Joe Swift had never grown vegetables seriously before, but he took the challenge to forego his weekly box scheme in favour of allotment life. This programme looks at the ups and downs of his year'

I always think he's cheated as he clealry had help, just so happened found a great shed, got loads of free wood, lorry load of chip wood, a load of help to make raised beds the list goes on....

but I still like watching anything to do with growing your own
    Kind Regards

I sometimes wonder whether he makes it seem too effortless.I think if I was a beginner I might become a tad discouraged by my lack of progress compared to his.

I've been watching Gardeners' World for around 25 years and I'm sure they never used to make it look so easy (or am I just remembering through rose tinted glasses?)

Still watch it religiously though. :D

    I still love Geoff Hamilton.

I picked up one of his books - Successful organic gardening - it is just fantastic. I still flick through it. 99p from a second hand shop

It makes me laugh when you get these new TV gardeners and chef's who make out they have come up with a new style of growing your own veg and I flick through Geoffs book which was published in 1987 to discover the same practices.
    Kind Regards

We found a lot of useful books in charity shops. They were such voracious readers it was great to have extra books with the same level of vocabulary to give them some variety (and, at that level, maths hasn't changed much over the years either).

The library was useful too. The staff are very helpful if you ask them. (We must have made quite an impression on the librarians - they're still ringing us, or grabbing OH in the street, to suggest books they think littl'un would like!)

Geoff Hamilton is my hero. I learned almost everything from him (and Dr. Hessayon's books). There was a series called "All Muck and Magic" (featuring a gorgeous young man called Monty Don) in 1989 but Geoff had already been gently suggesting organic practices for years before that. He never forced it down anyone's throat, but his methods made so much sense (and saved money into the bargain!)
