well i've been stuck indoors all day. Had really hoped to dig over the plot today since it's dryed out a bit but all the children are off school ill so been making a vat of veg soup and honey and lemon drinks for most of the day.
Thought I plant the seed of thought for some of you.
If you can't afford to make raised beds but would like them try deep beds. mark out the area the area then dig to at least a spades depth and put soil to one side then dig the next section but put the soil into the previos bit you dug and so so on. when you get to the last bit fill with the first lot of soil you took out. During the digging process add sand, manure and compost to create a nice mixture. I've done this before but dug it to the depth of two spades. It was hard work but I must have done a good job as the carrots grew.Kind Regards

Do you scieve (sp?!) your plot? I dug almost all except 1/8th of my plot to 1 spades depth after we moved in. I got up stones, bottles, glass, cans alsorts of rubbish and tons and tons on bricks and rubble. I dug over 3 times then scieved it (the whole 1 spades worth lol) and popped that aside in a big heap. Then I put the scieved soil back into the hole and raked over it. MEga hard work. Just wondering if I need to Scieve it this year at all. Didnt add any compost etc before just dug so shall add compost this year. Roughly how much compost per sq metre?0 -
Wow! Rebekah that sounds like hard work! But it would certainly improve my garden which is full of stones and rubbish. It would certainly be worth adding compost but I doubt you need to sieve it again.ilovefreegle.org - give it away don't throw it away0

Hi Mum of 4
Have just pm'd you. I think that there is a real knack in maintaining a good supply of crops. I used to grow more things but feel that I wasn't particularly good at the "planning" side. As a result, we'd have a glut of things like beans or tomatoes ...which would result in me giving some away to friends and family and anyone else who expressed an interest....and also ended up with e.g. bean-dominated menus for a few weeks!
I would love to get back to growing some more fruit and veg - and maybe get some chickens since we have a bit more outside space now - and not just for moneysaving reasons. When you're as organised as you clearly are, then you know exactly what you are eating, where it has come from and how fresh it is. There's nothing like picking a few fresh lettuce leaves to make a salad. Certainly beats buying that bagged stuff in the supermarkets which for one thing is quite expensive and goes a bit limp and brown at the edges if you don't eat it straight away.
Would be so grateful for a copy of your planting plans.0 -
Some of you have been so kind with all your offers in exchange for the planting plans which I have of course turned down but I would now like some help.
I have to write a formal letter of complaint to my DD head detailing all the failings of my DD teacher and how it has affected my DD.
I'm rubbish at writing formal letters, I'm so out of pratice. If any of you know where there might be examples of such things please pm me or can offer me any help I would be so grateful.
I need to try and email a draft to the head by 4.30pm with a printed letter first thing Monday morning as he as a review meeting with the LEA and governers concerning the said teacher.
I was going to list the main 5 areas of concern and make a comparison to the reception year and ask if another teacher could access my child's learning abilities.Kind Regards
