ROAST VEG BAGUETTES
1 red pepper - £0.60
2 red onions - £0.48
1 butternut squash - £0.69
4 pack of baguettes - £0.99
1 pack of feta cheese - £1.09
take seeds out of red pepper and slice into long slices;
peel onions and cut into wedges;
peel butternut squash, remove seeds and chop up into pieces roughly the same size as the onion wedges;
bung the whole lot into a large roasting tin and drizzle with olive oil and coarse ground salt and black pepper and a bit of dried herbs de provence. Roast on a high heat (210) for about 30 minutes until soft and charred;
cut open the baguettes lengthways and open out and drizzle with a little olive oil or spread with some butter;
spread veg mix on the baguettes and crumble cheese over the top. Return to oven for a couple of minutes until heated through. Tastes lovely! Total cost £3.85 and REALLY easy and looks nice!
PUDDING
Queen of Puddings
3 eggs, separated - £0.40
2 slices of white bread, blitzed in food processor to make crumbs - £0.10
300ml whole milk - £0.30 (v. important not to use skimmed or semi-skimmed milk)
200g sugar - £0.20
jam or lemon curd - appprox £0.15
bit of vanilla extract from storecupboard (optional)
whisk egg yolks, milk and 50g sugar (and vanilla if you have it);
grease a shallow pudding dish and put in breadcrumbs;
pour over the egg custard and leave to soak for about 10 minutes.
Put in a low oven (150) for about 20 minutes.
Whisk egg whites until stiff and fold in remaining sugar.
spread jam or lemon curd over the top of the set custard mix thingie in the pudding bowl;
top with merringue and return to oven on 140 for about another 25 minutes.
Total cost of two courses is £5.
If you just want to do a pudding for a fiver then you have so much more scope - cheesecake is always nice. I got this recipe from a novel I read in the 1980's and it is lovely -
600g cream cheese (philadelphia is best and nearly always on half price or bogof in one of the supermarkets) £1.82
150ml double cream £0.58
packet digestive biscuits £0.65
125g butter (don't use marg - it's rank and you won't win)
25g sugar £0.10
1 small tub of soured cream ££0.48
handful of sultanas £0.15
rind and juice of a lemon £0.25
3 eggs £0.45 (use free-range or you'll get sh*t from Ramsay)
100g sugar £0.20
Blitz the digestive biscuits in a food processor;
melt butter and mix in crumbs and the 25g sugar;
Get a loose bottomed cake tin (8") and press the crumb crust into it - press down firmly and set aside.
mix the cream cheese, 100g sugar, lemon rind and juice, sultanas, soured cream and double cream - DON't whip it or over beat it as it will not be nice and dense when cooked and that is what you want it to be like. when mixed taste it to see if its sweet enough (also looks v. cheffy) and add more sugar if its too tart, or add a bit more lemon juice if it's too sweet. Pour mixture over the crumb crust and bake at 150 for about an hour. Allow to get really cold and eat.

This is quick, very easy, healthy and delicious! I only have full use of 1 hand and I can manage this so I am sure you could too!
Get fish fillets (I prefer to fillet myself but guess that might be too much for you!) My favourite is trout but it works with anything. P.S I ALWAYS buy reduced from markets/ supermarkets and freeze
Lay each individual fish fillet on a piece of lightly greased piece of foil
Crush 1 clove of garlic over each piece of fish
Add 5 cherry tomatoes per serving (halved if large) or chop up larger tomatoes (which are cheaper) in to equivalent sized pieces
Add 1 to 2 mushrooms sliced to each serving
Wrap each fillet of fish up in the foil and bake at 200 (190 fan) for 20 minutes at which point I usually cook potatoes and green vegetables to serve. The juice from the fish/vegetables that is left in the foil parcel needs to be poured over the fish.
This dish smells and tastes amazing and looks great with all the different colours.

May be cheating but most of these would be classed as "store cupboard" ingredients so in actual fact would cost next to nothing to make...!
Ingredients- 1 cup self-raising flour
- 1 Tbsp cocoa
- 1 Tbsp coffee granules
- 1 Tbsp boiling water
- 60g butter, melted
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1/3 cup caster sugar
- 1 egg
- Extra 3/4 cup caster sugar
- Extra 1 Tbsp cocoa
- Extra 3/4 cup boiling water

Quick and incredibly tasty also to cooked pasta,add a colourful cooked veg,eg broccoli and add 4 tablespoons of breadcrumbs which have been fried in olive oil with 2 cloves of crushed garlic.The (credit) crunch-y texture of the garlicy breadcrumbs is a revealation with pasta-try it!
Or what about a recipe with chicken livers?
I always buy herbs in the little reduced packs, (usually reduced to 15p in Asda)then wrap them in damp newspaper-they keep in the fridge for ages like this.If you need to add to any recipe for colour they need not be expensive!
If you have to cook with any frozen veg for economy and taste ,without upsetting the foodies too much,(?) frozen petit pois are the thing.(currently birds eye .99p for 640 g in tesco,half price)
Quickest yummiest dessert idiotproof--again you must try, to appreciate.
4ox demarara sugar
8oz golden syrup
4oz butter
1/2 pnt milk
melt butter,sugar and syrup (watch it doesnt burn,should be quick).Boil for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes.
Heat up milk until nearly boiling-(watch it doesn't boil over) 4 slices of bread with the crusts cut off into 4 slices,into a largeish bowl.pour the milk over.(milk soaks in), lift the bread out and put into individual bowls.pour over the yummee warmed toffee sauce.Use this if time is lacking, I haven't met anyone who didn't like it.Serve immediately with well-chilled whipped cream0 -
There's lots of great ideas on here and I'm sure that Martin will do Old-Style proud. Anybody willing to give him a 'Jamie-style pass-it-on lesson'?
But wouldn't it be great if Martin could have a 'trump card up his sleeve' for the towards the end of the programme! An old-styler (I'm thinking somebody like Weezl for instance) who could produce a 'feed your family for A DAY' menu - including breakfast and packed lunches - maybe using left-overs to show how to 'reduce waste in the home'. I'm not thinking restaurant-style meals here - but good, wholesome, home-cooked food that would provide all the necessary nutrients, fibre, protein and vitamins required.0 -
if budget is an issue, a couple of things to be aware of - season well with lots of herbs as it will help the food taste good...and give an extra chance. try to let the seasoning take place for as long as possible...and presentation can make something very cheap look very expensive - for example a hotpot cooked in individual ramekins. i would personally look at traditional food, and not just from the uk - go for making a simple but tasty curry for example as this is a food that has been eaten by people of budget for generations...good luck and cannot wait to see it!Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. some great ideas here, but I suppose it depends on the point of the exercise - are you trying to beat GR for economy? for nutritiion? for both? or is it just a need for an easy recipe that can be picked up and passed on (is he copying JO here, as he's done before? :rolleyes: )
and incidentally Martin, you'll always beat GR hands down for personality and charm

hammyhunter's fish fillets have my vote - so simple and they sound DELISH!!! Also, will look lovely on the plate and easy to dish up.
I would go with a main course, too. I agree that £5 for a dessert is expensive.
