The carbonara sound yummy and easy to make

    For Desert:

Please try the 3 min choc pud mug, goes down a treat in fancy cups topped with some squirty cream/whipped cream, choc shavings and half a strawberry to garnish.

You can add choc chips to the mix too.

Gordon Ramsey's new Cookalong programme is doing a credit crunch special and I've been asked to cook a MoneySaving dish against him - on a sub £5 budget though the cheaper the better.

    Here's the problem. I AM A TERRIBLE COOK. .......

AND i need to be able to present it well and easily... AAAAAAAAAARGGGHH

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Sorry not very helpful, but I just couldn't resist.

Time for Martin to have a read of some of the Cooking for Bloke threads, methinks. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=273825

Best of Luck, Martin. I am sure that your Old Style readers will be rooting for you. Heck, I shall even watch the programme even though I can't stand Gordon Ramsey.

    Put in a mug....

    4tbsp of SR flour
5-6tbsp of sugar - Its a personal taste thing.
    2tbsp of cocoa powder
    1 egg
    3tbsp of milk
3tbsp oil - plain veg oil, sounds odd but you cant taste it or you could experiment with melted butter

    drop of vanilla (optional)
    1tbsp of chips (optional)

Mix and put in microwave 3mins for 1000 watt, 3 1/2 for 650.

Sub £5.00? per person, per family? I would assume it might be per family because Jamie Oliver does that for Sainsbury's

Here's the problem. I AM A TERRIBLE COOK. I need something simple, but sexy, that'll beat him. Im thinking desert would be easy. It also needs to be something NOT out of a recipe book - if i do it I will try and credit the oldstyler with the dish.

This is so simple - anyone can do it. I have passed it on to several people including a discerning Japanese man who uses it as his signature dish. It could be yours too

    This always looks good.

We call them bacon steaks which are like small burgers wrapped in bacon, served with baked tomatoes, petit pois and roast butternut squash. The colours are gorgeous.

Tesco value beef mince 800g £2.00
(value mince or bog standard butcher's mince is better for this recipe as the fat is required)

Tesco unsmoked streaky bacon 250g 1.77

4 or more fresh tomatoes (free fom allotment)

    frozen petit pois

butternut squash, peeled, seeded and diced )(Free from allotment

Divide the mince into 12 portions (approx small handful each)and with your hands shape into balls.

Wrap a piece of bacon round each ball forming a collar and squash each burger a bit.

Put in a shallow roasting tin and bake in oven at about 180 (fan) for about 45 mins.

Put a couple of tablespoons of olive oil in another ovenproof dish and put in the squash. stir it a bit with your hands to evenly coat the squash with oil. Put this in oven too. Keep an eye on this because it sometimes cooks too quickly - if it looks too brown too early take it out and reheat about 10 mins before serving.

After 45 mins there should be some fat at the bottom of the meat tray and the burgers will be brown.

Make a small cross with the point of a knife into the dome of each tomato, brush with some oil. Put in with the meat along with approx 8 tablespoons of frozen petit pois, stir round a bit and cook for a further 15 mins.

Serve the roast butternut squash in the centre of a serving dish with meat, tomatoes and peas arount the edge.

This is the most basic and simple version, you can add onion, breadcrumbs, herbs etc to beef mince as required. You could serve it with a peppercorn sauce or similar but this isn't necessary at all.

how about a fruit crumble ,
that simple easy and quick to do using oatmeal in the crumble mix

    eg. apple and raisin
    apple and blackberry
  • Martin, I'm distraught you cannot cook- not very MSE!

I think an impressive main course for well under a fiver would be much more impressive than a pud for under a fiver! I agree that it would be wonderful to show how cheaply you can stretch meals with the addition of red lentils and oats. Chilli would be awsome and you could serve it with rice, tesco value tortillas, a dollop of sour cream and some home made guacamole for under a fiver I reckon.
