I think that something done in a slow cooker...maybe a chilli or a bolognaise sauce.
It could be bulked out with lentils and plenty of hidden veg, with the leftovers frozen for another day.
Put on in a morning before mum has to go out to work.
If doing pasta, that can be left in cold water, then it hardly takes any time to cook, or if doing jacket potatoes, do a load in the oven and the left over ones can be frozen then defrosted and microwaved to re-heat.
On the spare shelf in the oven a few batches of Twinks hobnobs could be cooking to used as a treat or in packed lunches.
I think that as well as doing a cheap meal, it could help to show people how make the most of the money they are spending on heating the oven.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -

Ooh nice one. You could also do a seasonal take by using blackberries? If using bought meringues, I would recommend M&S - they're the only "chewy" HM type ones I've ever found in shops - yummy!
With the mention of trifle below thought I'd throw in my recipe as a helpful suggestion?
Slice up madeira cake and place in the bottom of a large glass bowl. Sometimes I sandwich thinner slices together with apricot jam. Sprinkle with amaretto. Add a can of drained apricot halves (you could poach your own if trying to live up to Mr Ramsey's standards) Top with thick custard. Then finish with thick Total Greek yoghurt (haven't found a branded one yet that is as thick and creamy) or whipped cream. I prefer the yog as gives a fresh twist and the good stuff is creamy and thick enough to work.
Love and compassion to all x0 -
If you're thinking desert, Trifle is easy with no cooking. It can look great in individual portions.
Sponge
Cream
Fruit
Custard
Jelly
and whatever else you want to add.... liquor?
You could do a chocolate orange one with choco custard, oranges, chocolate on top....
I think you need more info though, it may have to be a main dish?
Good luck!0 -
How about a classic steak?
Morrisons have steak on offer so a good sized steak is in the £2 mark.
Making it a bit different rather than chips, get two potato's, chop into smallish cubes (skin on for flavour) par boil for around 5-7 minutes, get an oven dish with olive oil and sprig of rosemary, get that hot, once hot pop the pots in and roast for about 10-15 minutes. Grill a large mushroom with a little garlic butter in it and serve with fresh peas, cost about £3.00. Sorry rubbish at puddings!!:rotfl:Ahahah got my signature removed for claiming MSE thought it was too boring :rotfl:0 -
2x passata (we use the lidl stuff @ 29p each....most stores do a similar priced one)
one large onion 10p
two small carrots 10p
4 mushrooms 10p
Half a pot of single cream 25p
Basil 5p
Seasonings - negligable
Garlic puree - 10p
1kg pasta (19p for 500g....Value fusilli twists at Morrisons)
Tip Passata into pan.
Slice and dice the onion and add to pan
Slice carrots as finely as possible, and add to pan
Slice and dice mushrooms, add to pan.
Add a squirt of garlic puree
Add around a 1/4 pint of water.
Bring the whole lot to the boil, then simmer gently for about 30 minutes.
Put a pan of water on to boil - enough to hold the kilo of pasta.
After 30 minutes, blend the tomato mix until smooth.
Add pasta to boiling water - some people add oil to stop it sticking, but I never have a problem with this. Cook pasta until it is firm to the bite, but not too soft or crunchy.
When pasta is cooked, drain and place back into big pan.
Add cream to the tomato mix. Stir well, and season.
Empty the entire contents of tomato pan, over the pasta and stir thoroughly.
Serve.
After the blending stage, you can also add ham, mushrooms, cooked onions, cooked prawns, cooked chicken, etc etc, to the tomato mix.
Also tasty with mature cheddar or parmesan sprinkled on the top and allowed to melt.
If you want to add a further step, you can cook the pasta for slightly less time, add a little more water to the tomato mix, empty it all into an ovenproof container, cover with cheese and bake in the oven at gas mark 5 until the cheese is bubbling and beginning to brown.
What you end up with, is a rich tomatoey sauce, with a hint of garlic and basil that you can bulk out with meat/seafood/vegetables if liked.Proud to be dealing with my debts :T

ok, we all rave about lentils on here, how we bulk things out with them, so why not focus on meal which doesnt hide them, and show everyone how good, nutritious and cheap they are. It would also be good to make a desert using things you have picked or been given for free.
Im thinking......
Lentil Dhal with oven baked potato wedges to dip into it.
Followed by Blackberry and Apple Crumble
Nice simple recipes, that would easily give you money left over from your fiver!
I will post the dhal recipe, if you like the idea. It's the start of the no takeaway challenge.0 -
Hi Martin,
Here's a really easy, quick recipe which I think is quite impressive. (I should say that I typed this out about 6 months ago so I don't suppose the prices are correct anymore, we all know how much prices have gone up!)
SEAFOOD AND FENNEL STEW (serves 4)
1 tbsp oil £0.02 (Oil )
600ml chicken stock (1 cube) £0.11 (Kallo Org. Chicken Stock Cube 66g £0.66)
1 clove crushed garlic £0.03 (Tesco Garlic each £0.35)
2 onions finely chopped £0.08 (Tesco Value Onions 2 Kg £0.78)
1 bulb fennel finely chopped £0.81 (Tesco fennel 250g £0.81)
Splash of dry white wine or £0.00 (I use frozen dregs, or a splash of Ouzo/Pernod!)
1 tin chopped tomatoes £0.21 (Tesco Value Chopped Tomato 400g £0.21)
200g frozen seafood, defrosted £2.00 (Tesco Seafood Fruits De Mer 400g £3.99)
400g frozen white fish, defrosted £0.80 (Tesco Value White Fish Fillets 800g £1.60)
150g spinach £0.76 (Tesco Spinach 500g £1.90)
TOTAL £4.82
Heat the oil in a large saucepan, then add the onion, garlic and fennel and cook gently for five minutes until the vegetables have softened but not browned. Add the white wine (or Ouzo) and cook for another minute. Add the chicken stock and tomatoes and bring to the boil, lower to a simmer, cover and cook for 10 minutes. Season to taste.
Chop the white fish into medium size chunks and add to the stew. Leave for a minute and then add the seafood and leave for a another two minutes. (Don’t stir or the fish will fall apart). Add the spinach and gently stir through and leave for another two minutes. Check the seasoning and serve in warm bowls.
If you need to keep it under the fiver or you don't like fennel then it's ok to leave this out, the same goes for the wine/ouzo/pernod if you don't have any to hand.
I don't suppose Gordan will be too impressed with using the 'value' products, especially the fish but then he doesn't have to cook on our budget!
Whatever you choose to cook then I wish you good luck!0 -
I can send you the recipe for the mexican spicy bean enchiladas I make, works out around 76p per person, save with salad, or sweet potatoe wedges.
