Is sounds odd but tastes great!
Make a rice pudding as usual. Quantities? How many people are you supposed to cook for?
When this is almost ready heat 2 tablespoons of butter in a frying pan, on a medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of dark brown sugar and stir until it is no longer grainy (ie fully disolved). Halve 1 banana per person and add to pan and cook for about 2 to 3 minutes each side until caramalised and soft. Serve on top of the rice pudding. The quantites for the banana topping are for 4 people - or two if you are dead greedy!). Delicious!
Good luck!!!!!The one thing children wear out faster than shoes is parents:D

Onion, bacon and potato lasagne.
Ingredients:
1 pack lasagne (£0.99)
1 pack value streaky bacon (£1.00)
2 large potatoes and 2 large onions (£0.50 max.)
bunch parsley, chopped (£.59 at the market)
2-3 stock cubes (£0.20?)
1 small block cheddar cheese (£1.00 max)
1 - Fry chopped onions with chopped streaky bacon, put aside.
2 - Slice potatoes thinly, put aside.
3 - Make a stock with the cubes, put a few spoonfuls stock in the bottom of a roasting tin (or square lasagne dish).
4 - Add a layer of lasagne.
5 - Cover with a layer of potatoes
6 - Scatter 1/4 of the fried onions and bacon mix on top of potatoes.
7 - Sprinkle grated cheddar on top, leaving enough to repeat as necessary (e.g use 1/5 if you are planning 4 layers, remember you need a bit of cheddar for the top!).
8 - Sprinkle a bit of chopped parsley on top.
9 - Repeat process until you finish the ingredients, then top the last layer with the remaining cheddar cheese and cover everything evenly with the remaining stock. Make sure the corners are well tucked in.
10 - Cover with foil and bake for 20 minues on medium heat, then remove foil and bake for another 5+ minutes on high heat. It is ready when cheese on top is golden and the stock all absorbed, but not too dry.
Buon appetito!

Gordon was on Jonothan Ross's programme last night and said something about feeding the family for under £10 so I only assume he's expecting Martin to come up with the same amount for half the cost.
http://www.mirror.co.uk/tv-entertainment/tv/tv-land/2008/10/15/crunch-time-with-gordon-ramsay-115875-20805561/ also states in mirror 3 course meal for 4 for under £2.50 per head, inc lasagneOne day I might be more organised...........

hi martin, what about going for oldstyle, family meal and money saving. i wouldn`t bother going 3 course as how many of us do that daily but for 2 courses you could do a traditional cottage pie, and for dessert a traditional bread and butter pudding. One day I will live in a cabin in the woods0

You beat me to it!!! I'm so chuffed you liked it enough to post itIts so cheap and easy and filling though. Maybe Martin could try it, its mostly just emptying tins into a pot and peeling potatoes...
I'd never thought of putting basil though, I'll try that this weekend!!
A chuffed to bits PGxx:j
Actually I just made a version of it tonight but without the potatos and with chilli and called it three bean chilli. It was yummy tooThanks again...

This is 2 courses for less than a fiver and very nice they are too.
I would never normally ever buy instant custard, I've never even tasted it - but there wasn't really enough money to buy custard powder and milk - if custard powder is a store cupboard item (it is in our house) then you can make it an still come in under £5. We normally have the chicken and chickpea bake with a bit of french bread - it would probably serve 5 or 6. Sorry about the value chicken legs - couldn't do it on budget with out them, or it would be hunt the chicken.
chicken and chickpea bake
2 tablespoons plain flour (store cupboard)
1 pack full chicken legs 1.87 sainsbury's basic
3 tbspn olive oil (store cupboard)
400g can chickpeas, rinsed, drained 40p sainsburys
1 garlic clove, crushed 34p sainsbury
1 onion, finely chopped 14p sainsbury
2 x 400g cans diced tomatoes 52p sainsburys basic
200gm chicken stock 1x cube (store cupboard)
1/2 teaspoon white sugar (store cupboard)
75g feta cheese, crumbled 1/2 pack Apetina Feta 60p sainsburys
salt and pepper (store cupboard)
heat oven to 180deg
take flour season with salt and pepper
take chicken and separate thighs from drumsticks and coat in seasoned flour,
in a large frying pan heat 2 tablespoons of oil and fry chicken for 5 mins turning now and again / untll brownish
transfer chicken to a large shallow baking dish add the chickpeas
heat a bit more oil add onion and garlic, cook for a few mins

then simmer for about 10 or 15 mins until sauce thickens
cover chicken in sauce

bake for about 40 mins
remove from oven and sprinkle and stir in chopped feta, return uncovered to oven until feta has melted - about 10 or 15 mins

Bananas and almonds
40g ground almonds from 200gm pack 20p sainsbury (on offer for 79p)
60ml cold water
4 large ripe bananas, peeled, cut crossways into thirds - 4 basic bananas 54p sainsburys

Here are two stylish dishes which are very easy to prepare and cost next to nothing.
1. Mercimek Corbasi (Turkish red lentil soup)
Put the following ingredients in a pan and cook together for 30 minutes (10 mins in a pressure cooker):
1 cup red lentils
1 medium size potato, in chunks
1 medium size carrot, sliced
1 medium size onion, roughly chohpped
750 ml chicken or beef stock (home made is best)
1 litre water
While the lentils and veg are cooking, melt half a tablespoon of butter in a small pan and add one dessertspoonful of flour, let it bubble while stirring until the mixture has a golden colour.
Add this to the cooked lentil/vegetable mixture, liquidise with a stick blender and add salt & pepper to taste. Simmer for another 5 mins or so. Serve the soup with some chopped mint on top and give lemon wedges with it for sprinkling it with a little lemon juice if desired. Serves 6.
2. Clafoutis aux pommes (traditional French dessert)
Peel, core and quarter a few apples and lay the quarters side by side in a tart tin, or even better a nice looking quiche mould (lightly buttered). The bottom of the tin should be covered, but it must be only one layer.
Combine the following ingredients in a bowl:
5 tbsp plain flour
9 tbsp sugar
Add 3 eggs, whisk together, then gradually add 190 ml milk, keep whisking until you have a smooth batter
Pour the batter over the apples, bake in oven (180°) for about 45 minutes until golden. Serve warm, at room temperature or cold with double cream. Sprinkle with icing sugar just before serving for effect."Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0
