Orbitz.com now offer a price assurance for US flights, so if your exact flight goes down they will refund the difference upto $250 which is fair.

    not exactly correct

It says if someone subsequently books the same flight at a lower price they will refund the difference

so its not just if the price goes down....how would you know if someone else has booked at a lower price, if they dont tell you

I think you should boycott the airlines that treat you in this shabby manner. Get yourself a little 'plane, and never worry again about the fares charged to others.

Failing that, just put your car on a ferry and drive yourselves to where you are going.

    Can anyone offer any advice?
    Errr... get over it?!

If you believe that you have booked at the best time possible then why go back and check what price the flights are? And I bet you wouldn't be complaining if you DID check back and they had sky-rocketed in price!
We should be saving as much money as possible, as it doesn't grow on trees!
If you should be saving money then don't go abroad so often. ;) As someone else has said, holidays are a luxury, not a right and many people can't afford them. Personally, holidays are something I am more than willing to pay for. I book my flights when I am happy with the price – so what if someone else gets theirs cheaper, there will be others paying far more than me.
    IT DOESN't happen on buses!!!!!
But it does happen on trains. I've paid anything from £11 to £57 to (most recently, and undoubtedly as punishment for travelling during peak times) a horrendous £150 for the same journey! Well that's just the luck of the draw. I wasn't exactly pleased about the latter figure, but I didn't have a lot of choice – it was for a job interview at short notice, fortunately I got the job.

Just because prices fluctuate does not make something a "rip-off". All too often people are coming onto these forums screaming "rip-off" when in fact it's nothing of the sort – it's business.
If I don't respond to your posts, it's probably because you're on my 'Ignore' list.

Nice flights are normally high for around that weekend, there is a huge property market real estate show/conference MIPIM on each year in Cannes

Once again a thread with a rip off in the title when it quite clearly isn't.

It's called yield management and it's how airlines are currently staying in business. There are a number of airlines out there who are currently struggling to stay in business, you may have read about a couple who have gone under in the last couple of months.

Airlines are running a business not a charity, if they don't stay in business then none of us will be going anywhere!

You were obviously happy with the price at the time you booked or you wouldn't have booked it. If the price went up I doubt very much that you would be calling the airline volunteering to pay more.

Is there anyone in particular you would like to claim your money back from? I really don't see what the problem is unless you have a problem with companies trying to stay in business

I'm sure that when you book a flight as cheap as you can get it; and then notice the flight has gone up in price a few weeks later, then you phone up the airline and ask how you should go about making up the difference??

    What? No? You don't?

...its called market forces, prices are calculated and changed according to demand, market situations, loads etc etc As far as I know, none of the airlines ever state "this is the lowest price you'll ever pay for this seat". Flight prices today are still cheaper than they were 10 years ago; even with oil prices being exponentially more; and in part that is due to the new way airlines operate (low cost, new pricing structures etc)

Comparing running a fleet of multi million pound aircraft that actually FLY, with running a bus service :rotfl:
