Icelandic Krona

Options
Before I start I'll let you know that i'm a complete novice and i've never used a forum up until now!

I'm going on a short break to Iceland in couple of weeks and i've just been looking at trying to buy some foreign currency. Unfortunately due to what is going on at the moment it would appear that there are only a limited amount of companies that are willing to sell any. Is it a case of just buy it where you can? This may be a silly question, but is it still safe to buy it?

Thanks for your advice in advance.

PS We have money with Icesave too!!

I've been trying all week to get some krona for a trip. The banks and PO have ceased trading in it and I was advised to take sterling and change it over there. M and S seem to think they can get some but I'm waiting to hear and don't hold out much hope.
  • Tut tut.... traitors!

Iceland is our enemy now, not our friend. Shame on you both for boosting their economy.

Especially the OP with the fact British taxpayers came to the rescue after Icelands openess about not abiding by their guarantees.

We're more interested in their fantastic geographical and ecological features (it's a field trip for school pupils) but will need somewhere to stay and eat whilst there.Sorry if that boosts their economy along the way but it's too good a trip to miss...

Yep, I remember the cod wars of the 70's, bloody Icelandic coastguards ramming our fishing boats:mad:, should have invaded them at the time then this would not have happened:beer:

Still, have a great trip, fantastic geology etc

Unfortunately I booked the trip at least 3/4 months ago, hopefully we'll still be welcome!! We'll just not mention Icesave!!

I don't like the thought of going all that way without any of their currency, but I may not have an option!

Surely the ATM's at the airport are still working??
  • I was there recently and used ATMs & Visa for purchases.

You are lucky to be going now in a way as the Icelanders will be fighting for your business!

Fly into the airport and get your bags.... once you pass through customs then on your left you will see an ATM and on your right you will see a credit card machine for the bus (cheaper than joining the queue). Between the ATM and the card machine you will see a fast food / WHSmiths sort of place

This may be scaremongering but I read on the 'tripadviser' forum that there may be a problem using your debit or credit card in Iceland!! Someone from Iceland rubbished this claim but it does plant a wee seed of doubt!!
