How did you teach your kids to wipe themselves properly after going to the loo ??

Sorry if this is too detailed but I don't know how to ask without explaining the problem fully :o

Anyway I potty-trained my 5yo dd when she was just turned 3 and she has been fine on the whole.
But sometimes she has got into a huge mess when trying to wipe her bum :o
I mean she gets a bit on her hands and then spreads it on other surfaces around the loo :rolleyes2

Has anyone else had a similar problem or got any advice on how I could teach her better ???

I know this is an embarrassing problem so please PM me if you don't want to post ;)

I know this may sound daft, but try the kandoo (or similar) toilet wipes, as without being (oh sod it) there bigger and can cover a bigger area, and unlikely to have a finger popping through the paper.

With DD we use to let her wipe her bum, then make a joke of it and say shall we check for you, just fell into place from there. xx
xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx

Thanks for posting M2O :T :A I know it's difficult to post about this sort of thing that's why I've tried to be as "sensitive" as possible in my first post ;)

Pretty much what we did with DS, get off toilet, wipe bum and then shout for a grown up to come and check

I remember when training my DS, i would hear a shout from the loo

Wipe my bum, and i would go and help him, then when i said he was a big boy now he can do it himself he would shout at the top of his voice at the top of the stairs Wipe my bum.

mind you kandoo's weren't out then, and i did think they were a gimmick when they came out, but no i think now they would be perfect,

Being wipes if small child gets in a mess then she can use em to clean her hands etc...

mum2one's suggestion was spot on........ now if we can train the OH to be just as clean... maybe aim in the pain, there would be peace and harmony
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

Mine started with me wiping their bum even when potty trained for number 2's then moved onto me checking their bum before they did it completely themselves. DD is 5 and still has occassional accidents or times when she has to ask me to check.

My DD is 4 1/2 too and insists she only needs 1 sheet of toilet paper no matter what she's produced... She goes through different phases of calling me when she needs a wipe or just sorting herself out... Thankfully though she never seems to get in too much of a mess... and since Hubby moved in with his moist toilet tissue habit she uses those with no bother at all... I never really saw the point in them myself but they do seem to make a difference...
A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...
Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.

  • DS [4:5yrs] knows to use a toilet wipe too, wipes himself and then usually shouts for help. Sometimes forgets and thinks hes independent enough to do it himself, most of the time hes fine but sometimes he doesnt clean as well as he should. Jus have to keep reminding him! :)

This has brought a very funny memory to mind!

When DD1 (now 17!) was learning I remember standing in the bathroom with her and telling her to gently pull one cheek to one side.

She did, but it was the cheek on her face:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

No help at all I'm afraid but made me chuckle when I thought about it again this morning.

This is a useful thread as I am having the same probs but with my DS who is 6!! When he was toilet trained we did everything you lot have wrote in the earlier posts. Then he started school and he comes home in a real mess ALL THE TIME. He does suffer from diahorrea a lot (which apparently a lot of ASD kids do) but his pants are always in a right mess. I have tried telling him again how do sort himself out at school, DH has tried repeatedly too but we just don;t knwo what to do. I am absolutely loathed to mention it to the school because (a) it is embarrassing and (b) i am not sure what they could do about it.

    Any suggestions (please!!)

I'm sure a school is used to it. You don't want to get a situation where they avoid going in school and give themselves upset tummies/ constipation because they are not going when they need to.

Stay calm and if they need to change when they come home from school they can. It will eventually sort itself out - no-one goes on honeymoon with their Mum in tow to wipe their bum!
