My opinion - if you can't afford to buy free range, don't eat meat. You're offered the choice to live your life how you want, these chickens are not offered the same chance.

I think this is a good deal and will be buying a couple for my freezer

I saw the programme to and if I'm right the professional snobs that ate them chose the cheapest chicken for flavour.
I think it is terrible how these chickens are kept. But I do think it's something the government need to take control of and sort.
We buy what what we can afford. So either the farmers need to make free range ones more affordable or we carry on buying what we can afford. As I've said before I don't choose to buy cheap and cheerful but needs must.0 -
I'm a veggie, but feed my DS meat and only buy the best for him for his health and for my beliefs too....however....if people want to take advantage of these offers to get their protein cheap when they choose to then that is fine by me, the problem is with those who allow the conditions to happen.
Please let's not slate those who choose to buy cheap chickens, to some this may be a treat and the only way their family can enjoy a roast dinner on sunday, followed by chicken curry on monday and chicken soup on tuesday!0 -
i bought one of these chickens and i didn't even blush when i paid for it!! haven't cooked it yet so will reserve judgement on the taste until then.0

What a ludicrous suggestion.Stompa0 -
I don't have chickens, but if I did, I would give them the choices I had in life, I would educate and nuture them, let them meet other like minded chickens, the suggestion of killing them, after I had watched them grow up, settle down, have chicks, would be the furthest thing from my mind. I say 1.99 for a chicken "bargain", never mind all the do gooders, who make sure that any chicken they buy has had a slightly better life, but is still dead...0

I am certainly not worried about whatever other people think when I put my cheap chickens in my trolley. You can make so many meals out of a chicken to feed a family to last a few days and for the price if you are on a budget its ideal. Why should my family go without a few meals because I have to pay more for a ethical chicken at more than double the price. To say that you shouldn't buy chicken if you can't afford free range is unfair to those who are on a very tight budget. I have previously bought ethical chickens but I cannot afford it at the moment, I'd rather eat than starve thanks very much. If you can afford the dearer ethical ones go ahead but do not judge someone who puts a cheap chicken in their basket. Previously I have found some you very good offers for organic lamb, etc in Tescos and its ends up being even cheaper than the normal lamb and I have bought if I can afford it.
Its the credit crunch - some people are on a lot less income than they were before and have to make changes to what they would normally buy in order to feed their family.0 -
Tesco Gateshead were out of £1.99 chickens today. Unfortunately the Credit Crunch is biting hard. Be under no illusions that the £1.99 chicken is any worse treated than the £3 or £4 ones - if it doesn't say free range or organic the only difference between a Tesco Value chicken and a Tesco Ordinary chicken is the amount of profit they slap on it.
I like meat, but cannot afford free range/organic. I make the most of what I have and eat what I like. I have Tesco Value Lamb Breast in the SC now and Tesco Value Chicken Drumsticks in the oven. In the fridge you'll find Tesco Value Casserole Steak, Tesco Value Carrots and Tesco Value Swede. Between it this little lot will keep me in food all week.
If you don't like my ethics, go sue me. Oh, sorry, you can't can you, because I'm not breaking the law!#145 Save £12k in 2016 Challenge: £12,062.62/£12,000.00 Beginning Balance: £5,027.78 CHALLENGE MET
