I bought one of these last week, it was ok but very fatty. I prob wouldn't bother again to be honest despite the bargain price.

  • I'm a convert to free range chickens too - I can tell a huge difference between the taste and the texture, and they do seem more filling and less fatty. Even the colour of them are different (the corn fed ones).
Talking about making food go further, we had a leg of lamb on Sunday for four of us, and I used the leftovers to make a lamb rogan josh (I added some sliced mushrooms to make it go further), and bought a cut price pack of chicken korma from Sainsburys for £1.49. I'm having the same two curries for dinner this evening with some pilau rice, so feel quite proud of myself. I find this bargain hunting in supermarkets very cathartic and it's a bit of a bug - even if I'm flush with cash I still look for bargains wherever I go. I got it from my mum, and I thank her for that.

I can remember growing up as a child mum making a chicken dinner on a sunday for 5 of us, Monday was curry with the left over chicken and Tuesday was chicken soup from the bones. Wonder how many people still do this now. Mum also made all her own burgers, fish cakes and pies.

Chicken soup for us tonight too, tho' we had the meat leftovers with extra veg and gravy made from the Christmas gravy in the jar they reduced to 10p earlier in the year!
Have you tried cooking up some value/ smartprice penne pasta (around 20p)in the stock? It takes on that wonderful flavour! Add a tin of value sweetcorn and a well-balanced and tasty meal.

Relating to Tesco Market Value food - not sure about the quality as had a delivery last week - pack of sweet potatoes - display date of 18th October - completely and utterly mouldy when got out to use yesterday - never seen mould like it in all my years - makes me question if it is really value for money at all if it goes mouldy a week before its use by date - what other food are we eating that isn't visibly off.... hate to think! After doing a complete price match with Ocado last week - I think I will stick with Ocado as the prices were very competitive on most goods.
  • We had one of these last week. Basted it in honey and it was actually rather nice.

dont care how desperate we get in the credit crunch, buying these poor creatures is so wrong, you see those red marks on the knees, thats where the chickens cant stand up, they are feed to fast to get fat and the legs cant take the weight, and there are so many to a cage they cant get up if they wanted to.is that right to you?
    gets off soapbox...
  • Needs Must, I thought the one I ate was tasty.. shame about the conditions the chickens live in...

I happen to disagree with intensive farming and only ever buy free range meat. However you post things on here and it's up to people to make their own decisions about how they spend their money, right?
  • I saw these chickens in my local Tesco metro this afternoon and bought two. Yes I did see Hugh's programme on ethical chickens but I simply cannot afford these ones at the moment, i have bought them in the past especially after I saw that programme. They didn't seem to have any hock marks you were talking about. I cooked both of them tonight and they were fine, wee bit dry but perhaps I overcooked them.(Gravy and bread sauce sorted that out.) Got lots of meat leftover so will be making curry etc tomorrow to use it up and using it for sandwiches.

If you are on a budget and are feeding a family of 5 people I would rather buy these chickens at the moment so I can afford to eat the rest of the week. The price of chicken lately has been rediculously high and I haven't been buying it til now. If I had the money I would buy ethical but I haven't.
