If she can't tell difference between left and right, she will have problems using Satnav.

she found it stressful trying to understand the instructions

Surely that could have been sorted out in the first couple of minutes of the test, if she had actually mentioned it to the examiner.

Please do come back to the thread with the outcome of the DSA's investigation.

If she can't tell the difference between left and right she may have problems full stop. Isn't one of the points of having to pass a test being able to demonstrate timely reactions to whatever's happening, and so demonstrating the driver is in charge of the car ?

On what grounds do you think she should complain, just because she disagrees with the result?

I used to sit in the back of tests and could see pupils making mistakes and even if they passed or failed when you talked to them after they did not know why they had received points.

I am sorry but having worked as an instructor I cannot see any reasonable grounds for a free retest, she should put it behind her and make sure she is ready for a second test.

Thats why I said "You could complain & she may well get her next test free, if you feel that strongly then perhaps you should" I didn't say she was definitly going to get her test free. I also made the point that my relation felt that she had been unfairly failed but on discussing the issue it was quite clear she had made an error. At the end of the day neither of us were on the test, none of us were the examiner or pupil so we don't know what happened if she wants to make a complaint its her perogative and I do find the tone of your response a little sharp. Of course she should be ready for her next test, as whether she gets it free or pays for it she will stay have to take it again.

If you know the way to town/someone's house/college etc then you don't need to know what the two words "right" and "left" mean. Its more important to know how to drive safely. I think you will find there are an awful lot of people out there who get confused between left and right and they aren't all classed as special needs.

    I managed to follow a map for 23 years before I got a satnav so I don't think its a huge requirement!

She did and they said they had no record of it and her examiner cut her short when she tried to explain and said "my instructions are clear!"

Just hope she doesn't come across any "No Left/Right Turn" signs in words and without symbols. Many years ago a former colleague tried to remember the difference using the fact she was right handed, I think it worked!

As I understand it you won't fail a test for not following the instructions. ie if they say turn left and you MSM correctly right you don't fail. Its the examiners job to get you back on the route.

What is the obsession with doing the test routes, your not going to stick to one area of town when you pass are you? Just drive alot so you kown how to deal with most situations about 12000 miles worked for me.
