I do similar. I have money coming in and money going out for all sources, which calculates my gross profit. Then I have another section with mileage and I jot down the towns I've visited for that day, and it works out my expenses at 40p a mile. Then it takes the expenses off the gross profits to give me my net profits. When it's tax return time, I can just copy the relevant figures off the spreadsheet.

For PAYE work, I have a seperate page for each company and list the miles I've done and the amount of reimbursement (if any!). Then it calculates the difference between the reimbursement and 40p, which you can use to offset a bit of tax on each employment page of the tax return :)

I built myself a spreadsheet as I used to do it all by hand on paper, but Timmne told me off :o
    Never! :rotfl:

My clerks at work are concerned about my love for spreadsheets- made worse by my mug which says "I love spreadsheets" :D

Mine are all on paper at the moment in an accounts book. :o - I need to find time to sort out a spreadsheet version. At least I have it all written down though, so hopefully it will be easire to transfer. I have put off trying the computer ones I must admit, I'm a bit of a coward. I have this vision of it taking days to get my head round it :o .

If you PM me your email addy, I can send you a copy of my s/sheet, if you like. It's very easy and quite basic, but does the trick, I find.

is it acceptable to only do mileage say a week at a time? I don't have to show *exactly* how much mileage I used for each job?

Has anyone ever received a proofreading query message from RE after a report? Got one some time ago, and called RE just to be informed that everything's fine. Is it an automatically generated email, any ideas ?

I use a professional accountant to sort out the self assessment, which costs about 250. No doubt that's the better and reliable option, if you can justify the cost. BTW, I've got other self-employment income as well - couldn't afford the professional for the MS income alone

Unfortunately, my MS work is the only self employed work I do. I couldn't justify the cost. It isn't the 'doing' of the accounts, it's just I haven't ever used anything on the computer before! I'm fine with an accounts book but I will want to submit my tax return online so it will be easier to learn now lol. Slow learner lol.
