How much for rent?

I'd start with going on the DFW board with a full SOA...
However - as someone who's lived with her OHs parents for several years I can honestly say I'd never do it again! EVER!
That said - as far as what rent is fair - check the local papers and see what a large room costs in a shared house in that area. That will tell you what is a fair rent. Around here (Oxon/Bucks) I'd say for an ensuite in good condition and that large you'd be paying around £400 a month easily - more if in a good location! £150 will barely cover the increased costs for heating, water and electricity of having 2 people extra living there. But other areas of the country will be different so check local prices...DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

Thats a good idea about the local rooms to let. Ive just had a look and theres one in my area for £300 inc. all bills. We are in the North Cornwall area. I guess we will have to ask my parents and then ask OH parents and see what happens.
I agree, we have lived with my parents and OH parents. I was fine at mine, but didnt like it at theres (natually) which is why its so difficult. I dont want OH to feel 'not at home' but then again, I dont want to be the one.
I will go over to the debt free board and post my SOA now. Hope to see u over there.

Well, it seems that one either of you don't want to live with other's parents. Would his parents charge you the rent? If not, do you think the extra petrol to commute from his parents would cost you more or less than the rent you have to pay to your parents? I think if the rent is less than the petrol would be, then you have a case to put to your partner and say that the reasonable way would be to go to your parents. If not - I think you should bite the bullet and stay with his family for a while, while the debt is reduced, or live separately for a while. Do you both work in the same place? (Would it be the same commute for both of you?)
I know I wouldn't like to live my OH parents, but I am sure he wouldn't like to live with mine either.Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0 -
Sorry I guess I misunderstood - when you said your partner had issues with your parents and that you keep falling out over where to move to I assumed that he really really didn't want to live there. I guess what I was saying was that forcing him into it is something you might live to regret - but only you know if that's true.
I do have a lot of sympathy on the smoking though - a lot of my DHs family smoke and much as I love them it really does make visiting a bit of a chore. When I get back every single item of clothing, including underwear, smells of smoke. Ugh.
Sounds like renting a room might be the way to go.0 -

Im not sure if his parents would charge rent or not, They have a 2 bedroom annex on the side of their house where my OH's sister and her partner live and they pay £30 a week plus the phone bill, so tbh I dont think they would be charging alot for us. if it worked out that it was cheaper to live there (taking into account the petrol) then yeah I probs would get on with it seeings as its only a year. Yeah we both work at the same place so thats not a big issue I guess. Yes I agree, naturally everyone would prefer to live with their own parents.Credit Cards at 0% £958.00Credit Card at 19.9% £2305.65Total Debt: [strike]£6290.76[/strike] £3263.65DFD: Dec 090 -

No need to say sorry - I didnt write it very clear. My OH wont rent a room. He doesnt trust things like that. I will suggest it to him again though. thanxCredit Cards at 0% £958.00Credit Card at 19.9% £2305.65Total Debt: [strike]£6290.76[/strike] £3263.65DFD: Dec 090 -
Is it compulsory to live together? You could just go back to living at your own parents' house. A strong relationship would survive that and it might give him a bit of time to reflect on where his debts have landed him if he's not got ongoing advantages.
