Because you're looking at the budget end of the market, the more expensive ones comes with a multitude of connections.

Just use DVI, there'll be no difference
  • Is it a given that if a monitor has a HDMI input that it also has HDCP?

No i am saying a monitor that only has VGA and HDMI inputs, for DVI connections, which adaptor is better ?

In that case, HDMI will give better picture quality than VGA.

    Yes.

    Ok good to know.

And when you are using the HDMI input, should you use a cable or an adaptor to link it to DVI?

Will there be any difference in picture quality between connecting a HD source (Bluray,PS3 etc..) into a HDMI input and connecting a HD source into a DVI input via a HDMI to DVI adaptor?

Shouldnt be. Theres no 'conversion' needed. It just means itll cut the sound out

Meaning, there is no way to retrieve sound when plugged into a DVI input rather than the HDMI input?

well not out of your tv/monitor, no

Though you can plug the sources directly into a surround sound system for example, via an optical lead
