  • is a tricky one. if a buyer chooses not to pay the extra they shouldn't get a refund if something goes wrong imo. but its not as simple as that unfortunately.

  • From ebay:
What can I do if the maximum P&P costs do not cover my expenses for packaging and postage?
The maximum P&P cost may not cover sellers' P&P costs in some cases. In the event that it does not, you can do one of the following:
    • When selling via fixed price, include all or part of the P&P cost in the item price.
    • When selling via auction:
      • Continue to list your item with the same start price and a P&P price at or below the maximum postage cost. Many of our sellers have success with auctions, even when offering free P&P, because their item looks more competitive to their buyers.
      • If your actual P&P costs are higher than the maximum P&P cost, start the item price higher to cover your P&P cost. This technique will minimise any risk that you will lose money on postage.
i.e. "We don't care, start your item price higher and give us lots and lots of lovely fees in the process."

This is sickening. eBay are fast becoming like this government....inforcing stupid rules, regulations and taxes on people. At least with eBay you are supposed to be "free" to do what you want to do, sell what you want at the price you want to sell it at. Their FVFs are getting stupidly high now and then you have Paypal (or should I say eBay again?!) taking their chunk of YOUR profits; and now you HAVE to offer free P&P on DVDs - how does that work?! What about the large and heavy set of seven DVD box sets that I just sold together and P&P cost me £20?! An auction is now ruled out and if I up the BIN price it will a) put off the buyers and b) make eBay even more cash!!!

I use Amazon Marketplace sooooo much more than eBay these days. I wonder why?....

  • although the level of the fvf's is getting higher, what i wish they would do is make them flat rates.

you sell the camera mentioned in the other thread for say £1000, and to make things simple, this is what they charge you as a fvf...

    "5.25% of the initial £29.99 (£1.57) + 3% of the initial £30.00 - £99.99 (£2.10) + 2.5% of the initial £100.00 - £199.99 (£2.50) + 2% of the initial £200.00 - £299.99 (£2.00) + 1.5% of the initial £300.00 - £599.99 (£4.50) + 1% of the remaining balance of the final selling price"

i mean come on, THAT is ridiculous !!!

Be careful what you wish for - they could just charge a flat 9% on all values....

Crazy, how are you supposed to follow what you are going to be paying if or when something sells - again especially on auctions - it's like they want to just throw out their original morals and the whole online auction house that got them where they are today and just become a massive shop with BIN (eBay Express anyone?!!?).

I always used to feel satisfied when it came to paying my eBay fees once a month or whatever. I felt that I had got really good value for money in regards to the amount I had spent to the amount I had sold and made.

Now I go to pay it and I have a heart attack!! Feel like it's not good value for money whatsoever
The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing:)
  • "Be careful what you wish for - they could just charge a flat 9% on all values...."

it would make calculations a lot easier thats for sure !! not that i'd want it that high for all values, but at least a staggered rate that you can work out in your head.

my fee structure is easy to follow and its made that way for good reason. if i charged like ebay do no one in their right mind would use me !

  • Maximum p&p costs for the Books, Comics & Magazines category is lunacy! A book can cost anything from 42p (small slim book 2nd class at Large Letter rate) to £9.30 to post (I'm using normal parameters here: I'm sure there are some books whose packed weight would exceed 6kg but the biggest I've handled would be in the 4-6kg bracket) - and that's just single books. What about sets? Is a seller expected to post the Encyclopaedia Brittanica for £2.75?
I take the point that some sellers overcharge for p&p (the most extreme example I came across was an auction starting at 1p for a large lot of computer games with £249.99 "p&p"!) but perhaps eBay could actually remove the offending listings instead of punishing other sellers? No, that would involve work, and as always eBay wants a quick fix which does not involve expending extra man-hours in the long term. Even so, capping p&p for a single DVD at say £1 or £1.50 would eliminate blatant overcharging and still allow for multiple postage discounts, which could genuinely benefit the buyer. Ebay doesn't care about the buyer any more than they care about the seller.
You'd think plummeting share prices and imminent redundancies would perhaps be a hint that eBay has taken a wrong turn somewhere, but instead of backtracking, they try to blame circumstances beyond their control and dig themselves deeper into their hole.

I think the free P&P is ridiculous. I think I'll be selling the dvds I don't want before January! And if I sell them after I'll use ebid or Amazon Marketplace.

I would just love for ebay to take a hard hit in its profits because of the change.

Perhaps ebay have done a deal with a big retailer of books/dvds?
