Ebay to make free postage on DVDs Compulsory!

  • It's going to screw international sales as well! You've got to advertise them at the higher price & then charge them postage as well. I agree with Brooker Dave, anyone with an ounce of common sense (admittedly, this discounts a number of people) would work out price + P&P before purchasing to sort out the best deal! Now, as mentioned, no bulk discounts can be given. Also, what happens to sellers who advertise job-lots of DVDs within the DVD section...are they expected to give free postage on 100/200 etc DVDs?

No advantage for seller, no advantage for buyer! Ebay screws everybody again & you just know they will come out with the usual guff about how everybody is better off!

Oh, I know this, but I honestly did not think that ebay could be so blatant about it, however after reading the post above it seems they were correct in assuming that many buyers would fall for it under the blind assumption that it was a benefit for them.

    Ebay = sinking ship....

  • having used ebay to buy almost anything, i don't recall ever buying a dvd or cd on there.

thats what play and amazon are for imo.

sellers having to add 75p (or £1.50 recorded delivery) to prices will make little difference other than put some small time sellers off. which is what all the changes this year appear to have been about anyway.

2 good reasons for free P&P:

1 Ebay get yet more money?

2 Ebay *may* have done a deal with a big retailer who can afford to chuck in free P&P are going to flood the site. Possibly ebay would rather deal with a few mega sellers than loads of Del Trotters all trying to flog the same old stuff and who don't have a call centre/warehouse system thus making ebay have to deal with problems (ebay hates costs)?

(Expect "free" P&P to be rolled out over the whole site)

well, i look at the total cost before buying, and i never buy from anybody who has over inflated their postal price. I would rather pay a few pennies more to somebody with a realistic postage cost than a greedy seller.
  • free p&p on heavier and/or more delicate items would bump prices sky high, but then i suppose the argument is that the buyer would still be paying the same.

personally i would inform potential buyers how much the p&p is in the listing, so they know how much has been added onto the price.

Buyers will have to pay more as sellers will be paying higher fees.

  • true, but then sellers already pay paypal fees on their P&P costs, so we are only talking about the fvf on the extra amount.

off the top of my head for my average item sent by courier this would add about £1.15 to the price if I passed it on to the buyer.

i agree with your point tho.

    You beat me to it!

This will kill off sales of heavy but cheap books. I still sell a few at around the £3-£4 marks but where postage up to 4Kg is £8.22.

The bit I do like, which I think will get buried as people discuss the post and packing, is that all UK shipping costs must be shown from jan 09. This won't help the more experienced buyer but it should help the newer buyer who would otherwise maybe bid without knowing the p and p costs.
