Thing is with that, it says the anti virus must be set to its MAXIMUM setting (well, 'best possible settings' it says). So does that mean it throws up a load more false positives on Avira?

Why should this single out Avira? Surely if false positives are found by Avira it's because they are included in it's definitions file or due to the particular way that it scans. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Within the program itself is a 'heuristic' setting. If 'HIGH' is selcted it tells me ~
"If this option is enabled, Avira detects a large number of unknown viruses, worms or trojans, BUT you must also expect FALSE POSITIVES'
Ive left it to its MEDIUM default for now:idea:0 -
The very nature of heuristic scanning means that it will trigger false positives.
Here's a decent read for a bit of background:

Exactly what happened when you tried to install AVG 8?
Can't remember the exact wording, but a message popped up saying the installation failed as my operating system wouldn't support it.
I've since uninstalled 7.5 and installed antivir. The same happened on DS's lappy, so loaded same on his. I also loaded superantispyware and ran everything as I know he never runs anything and visits betting sites(and god knows what else;)). Now he's complaining everything is slow so i'm currently running spybot and his antivir kicked in at the same time. Antivir is bleeping constantly with nasties - I'm choosing delete, is that correct?0 -
