avg 8

Options
I've still got avg 7.5 as every time I try to download 8 it fails. It gets to the end and then a message comes up saying my windows don't support it. I'm not with AOL (virgin). Am I OK to just delete the avg from the add/remove bit and load a different anti-virus, or is there a tool I can use? I've searched for advice on deleting, but can't find any.
Cheers

  • You can download any anti virus you want - all I would say is only remove one when you have already downloaded the other.

On the free front Avast and Anivir come recommended

Broadly speaking you need Windows 2000 or newer. Check HERE.

If not able to use AVG because of age of OS then the best option is Avast which will work with everything from Win95 onwards.
I use Avast with Win98se with no problems.

    Available HERE.

You are supposed to uninstall the 7.5 version before trying to download the 8.0 version. Try this and if it doesn't work, I have also heard good things about avast like spud17 said.

Shouldn't that be " You are supposed to uninstall the 7.5 version before trying to INSTALL the 8.0 version." ?

I know I should uninstall before new software, can i do this successfully myself? Someone posted a tool to uninstall Norton a bit back - didn't know if this was the case with avg?

I'm running xp, 2002, so not sure why it doesn't work for me!

No, I didn't uninstall 7.5 first - thought that was just for different anitvirus. I'll go and try that!

Yes you must uninstall AVG v7 (use the add remove programs in CP) before attempting to install v8. If you forget, you could have issues, fix is explained in another post I made a few weeks back.

Found your post, oh dear, I hate safemode - it scares me! I've just uninstalled 7.5 from CP, will it bodge things up if I try to install 8 before going in safemode?
  • I think you may also have to have SP2 before you can install AVG8, oh and btw: I successfully installed v8 over the top of 7.5 without any problems at all, the avg8 version automatically un-installed any older versions unless you system is screwed already :D
