Selling a contract phone on ebay

However, if you report a lost handset to Orange they will indeed ask for both SIM & IMEI. If you give them the IMEI for the T610 it would be unlikely for them to replace it within the insurance tems. Therefore, for insurance purposes, they are in fact tied for the duration of the contract. In this instance Orange would send you a replacement SIM, but not a handset, since you have indicated to them that it isn't lost. The T610's IMEI would be network barred.
(that was my point that they aren't tied)0 -
Going back to the main point, selling the free phone on ebay is not a problem, as it is an added perk to the contract. If you sell the phone, and then fail to make payments, your sim will be barred temporarily, and if you continue to refuse payment they'll reclaim the remaining line rental from you via a debt collector. The only way you can get your phone blocked is if you report it stolen or lost.0

I might have worded it wrong, but my point is any networks selling you a phone know the IMEI. Even if its pay as you go, they still take note of the IMEI.
From a personal experience with Orange, I lost phone but not sim card. BOTH were barred! and they would not issue me with another sim card because I had no insurance!. So i had to pay up line rental for the year (lucky only month remaining)
In the networks eyes, your not supposed to use you sim card in another phone coz it might invalidate the insurance etc.
I disagree with your point. Then again insurance scams would run. If i bought a p910i but used the sim in the T610.
The T610 would not get BARRED. It has nothing to do with Orange.!! But the p910i WOULD get barred!!. Its obvious..
If not I would go along one day, go get a nice contract top spec phone. Put sim card in !!!!!! phone and declare it lost. Would you not think the p910i would get barred. ITs common sense.. Course it would.Halaku wrote:Going back to the main point, selling the free phone on ebay is not a problem, as it is an added perk to the contract. And also bar the phone mate. Networks can block the phone for a number of reasons, and one of them is actually making late payments.!!The Mobile Phone Specialist ;-)0 -
The network has no right to bar your phone if your contract time is up. Thats all I can say.

I take out a contract with a bulky expensive phone say P910i, I'm going out for the night and decide the P910 is too big so drop back and use an old T610 or somesuch that I have lying around and put myc ontract SIM in it instead. I accidentally lose the T610 with my contract SIM whilst out and about and report it to the network. The network then bar the SIM, are you now saying they'll blacklist the P910 that I have sat at home and can vouch for the whereabouts or the T610 that I have told them was lost and was the last associated IMEI with the contract SIM I have lost?
If the SIM and phone are tied in why do Orange(as an example) need to know the IMEI when you report it stolen?
Then call us on 07973 100 158 (lines open 24/7) with the police reference number, as well as the IMEI and SIM Card number. We'll need to ask you a few questions and then we'll take it from there.
I missed this one
Right first off you invalidate your insurance if your using your sim card in not the given phone. They know the IMEI, yes, But i guess they need confirmation from you in case you try give another IMEI.
It depends really, I guess you would have to pay to get another sim card. And no the p910i would not get blocked since you would tell them it wasnt lost/stolen.
Orange can get cocky with their questions. Trust me they are worse than the police when investigating!!. Ive had 2 claims with them. One was ok, but they refused the second one, although my phone was genuinely stolen out of my pocket. (they claim that i should have taken better care of my stuff..lol)
Thats the point where I just waited for my contract to end, and I terminated. No longer with Orange now
But as for eBAY, Lots of phones are sold there all the time. Its just more of a risk if the phone was on contract!. But its one of them situation where your own instinct and judgement would be used to see if you would continue to buy or not.The Mobile Phone Specialist ;-)0 -

DjSwift - You have worded it wrongly. Whether the network sells you a handset or whether you buy it from a dealer, when you make a call both the IMEI and the SIM details are passed to the network.
Regarding your experience with Orange re the loss of your handset. Since you had not lost your SIM card and since you knew you were not insured for handset loss, I wonder why you chose to inform Orange that you had lost the handset in the first place? You would have been better to acquire a low cost handset in which to put the SIM you had, so that you could continue through to the end of your contract.
In the networks eyes, it doesn't much matter to them which handset you us to make your calls. The handset only becomes an issue when it's lost and when you want to make an insurance claim for it.0 -

I disagree with your comment that you would invalidate the insurance if your SIM was not in the prescribed handset. If the originally paired SIM and handset are insured, but SIM is separated from its prescribed handset and prescribed handset was lost, then you could claim on insurance for the lost handset.
If as you say, your phone was stolen out of your pocket, then Orange would normally replace it. If however, you say that you left your coat/bag somewhere and somebody took your phone, then Orange would not replace it under the insurance scheme. It depends on what you say happened and how you word it.0 -
I guess not taking Orange insurance is the best way forward and doing it via another company or house insurance is the way forward0

House insurance might be a tad risky for such a low value item Woby. They'd load your premium in the following year for claiming, and there might be an excess on the policy that would negate any gain.
So in the following year you try to insure you house contents elswhere and they ask you "how many claims have you had in the last x years"?............
Could be costly I think!0
