    You took your tooth out?

My Dad used to take his own teeth out. He used to go out to his shed and get a big cloth and, I believe, a pair of pliers and get to work. One day one of the small grandsons followed him out and unknown to him, watched him operating on himself. Child was about 7 at the time.

My mother was mortified because apparently grandson told his teacher and class next time they were discussing teeth cleaning/dentists etc. Apparently he did a very graphic demonstration of Grandad leaning over his workbench with a big cloth and he did all the grimaces etc so his teacher said.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Well from what I know I don't blame you. The last lady Polish Dentist at Newtown confided in me to say also that she did not like working for Denticare.

She said that she would like to do more for me but her restrictions and disciplines don't allow it. She even said that she did not even have all of the proper equipment needed to deal properly with some root problems I was having with my previous tooth.

I am certain that I suffered rather unnecessary pain because of it.

She has now gone back to Poland and I do not know if she went back of her own accord or was fired.

Cheers, and it is nice to be in touch again.

A big hello to all of my other ' chums' helping out around here.:D

If you remember in one of my first posts, when I asked about a Scale and Polish the Polish Dentist said that he didn't have the equipment to carry that out!!

    Bye and best regards

    Kenny

I have a question about scale and polish vs hygienist - I've looked all over the web and can't find the answer. What is the actual difference between the NHS scale and polish, and whatever the hygienist does?

I ask because my boyfriend and I went to the dentist recently for the first time in years. My boyfriend was told he should see the hygienist, I asked him why doesn't he have the scale and polish for cheaper, and boyfriend said that dentist said he could do that but the hygienist is better. So I want to know what the actual difference is, does anyone know?

A nhs hygiene visit is only applicable when clinically necessary eg when you have signs of gum disease.

It is not a preventative treatment and not cosmetic so eg if you have staining or tartar but no gum disease you are not going to get a scale and polish on the nhs.

If you see a hygienist you should not only have tartar and staining removed but more importantly they should spend time educating you on oral health eg use of floss, interdental brushes etc.

In a nutshell time is the essential difference when you pay to see a hygienist you are paying for the time nhs practice does not allow , and cosmetic stain/ tartar removal which the nhs is not designed to treat.

    Hello Everybody,

I suppose one of the overcharging items is a Scale and Polish along with associated treatment? In my experience, at least with Denticare Dentists this is exactly the case, as previously described.

'Dentists are overcharging patients and not informing them about NHS treatment to which they are entitled, an undercover investigation has found.
The three-month probe found some dentists are pressurising patients to go private – even though they could get the same treatment far more cheaply on the NHS'.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/9295340/Dentists-forcing-500000-NHS-patients-to-pay-privately-report.html

Dentists forcing 500,000 NHS patients to pay privately: report
Dentists are forcing 500,000 patients a year to pay for expensive private treatments by failing to tell them they are available on the NHS, according to an investigation by the Office of Fair Trading.

    Cheers

Kenny that's actually not the most accurate of reports. They ignored most of the people surveyed were happy with their care

Well, I've seen many discussions on this website go round in circles but this takes the biscuit!!

The DM item in your link was published on 23 May 2011 and was originally posted by you (post 724) on page 37 of this never-ending thread.

I'm not sure why you feel the need to restart a discussion from a year ago.
