Just as an aside, I had one of those 'No, it's not covered by the NHS. You must go private. Pain and bleeding are irrelevant' dentists.
To try and deal with it (I didn't know any better so thought I just wasn't cleaning properly) I bought an Oral B Triumph and used that, despite their dismissing it as 'pointless'. The visible portion of the teeth are spotless and there are still no cavities (I'm a zero filling person).
I finally saw a new dentist today, having moved house.
And guess what? The Bride of Dracula style bleeding wasn't due to stopping smoking - it was a combination of gingivitis and a side effect of taking steroids long term.
Now, having been refused NHS treatment for so long, despite my teeth being spotless, the stuff under the gumline has developed into periodontal disease, bone loss, and I will have 2 planing appointments in the next 6 weeks before being referred to the specialist. She even made the appointment for tomorrow, in her 'emergency slot' so I'm pretty sure it must be bad. That and the prospect of looking like Hammy the Hamster on one side throughout Christmas doesn't appeal.
It feels horrible to be told that yes, the dentist was in the wrong, there is and was treatment available under the NHS, but now you're much worse off because the old dentist decided to lie to you.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -

I've just followed this whole thread with interest, and would like to thank the dentists (and dental hygienist) for all their time and information - and demonstrating the patience of a saint!

I too wish to thank all Dentists and the 'offshoot' (No offence meant;)) services for their time and information - and demonstrating the patience of a saint.
BUT...with respect to them (If I may say that B.J.....oh! I can...thank you:p) they are not the only ones who have had to show patience here!;):DYou've heard the budget speech now you've been told. you.
There is a world of difference between someone wanting a scale and polish because "they have always had it" and someone who needs treatment because of periodontal disease.
With steroids,a previous history of smoking and deep pockets with bone loss at I presume an early age you should always have been offered treatment on the NHS.
As an aside root planing shouldn't leave you swollen but you will bleed quite a bit. You can also ask for an injection if it is sensitive, you may want to ask your dentist about using a sensitive toothpaste afterwards. Most important though is to follow dentists advice re tepe brushes etc as for periodontal disease to be kept under control it's 75% your effort and 25% the dentists/hygienists.0 -

I find when people have been long term smokers and then stop, outwardly their gums rapidly become horrendous. The assumption for this is their hygiene may have worsened however IMO this is not the case. That damage and inflammation was always there but it was being masked by the effects of the smoking. Remove that mask and the reality of the situation is revealed.0
