As advised in my earlier post just leave those questions out and it should still enrol you - it did me earlier.

Even though you book on line and quote your honours no, from memory you are still asked for your card at check in at the hotel, before they actually authorise for any points to be added to your account (even if you are not interested in collecting them). Upgrades are always dependant upon availability on the day and I have found some Hiltons more co-operative than others, but be prepared for no card shown, no upgrade!

Does anyone think we will actually get the Gold card posted to us???

I can't speak from personal experience but I cannot see them insisting on production of your actual card before granting the benefits of Gold status. I mean, what if you had achieved Gold "the proper way" only a few days before a stay? There's no way your new card would have been received but the system would show your new status.

I have Gold status with Marriott and have never once had to show my card at check-in.

Whether the cards will ever turn up - I don't know! There's always the chance that some sort of audit will be performed by Hilton or Air Canada or whoever and those who were not really supposed to get the upgraded status may have it taken away again.

  • I go on quite a few Hilton breaks but have never managed to get past silver status, so this is great !! On my last stay a few weekends ago I was asked for my card even though I had booked on line and they had my honours no on the booking?! I have took out the gold card in my partners name and will be trying it out in two weeks time ....

On another note, how do the Marriotts compared to the Hilton thesedays? Do they ever do any offers with DBB at the same sort of price levels? Can you recommend any? I like the country/golf hotels more than the central locations. Thanks again

They have an offer on at the moment.

Although it states "weekends only" I booked Sat-Mon and got the deal price for all 3 nights.

Hopefully an Executive upgrade too for £54 night .

It's worth pointing out that Hilton hotels are a franchise and because of this, the standards and facilities on offer vary wildly and those standards include the standards in staff!

As previously mentioned, you don't need to produce your card at check in, however, it is by far the easiest way to identfy yourself, ensure that your HH number is recorded, it cuts straight through any language barrier there may be and it reminds check in staff of your status. That said however, I would always recomend requesting an upgrade regardless of status as to the best of my knowledge, any upgrade is a manual process rather than an automated one. :)

With regard to status, folk should not get too carried away on the whole upgrade front if they have Gold Status, because the Hilton like many other chains have gazillions of middle tier members through CC offers, fast tracking, status matching, etc.

If you are staying for one night and you are Gold status, then you may well find yourself getting an upgrade to an Exec Room on check in….. If you are checking in late on for one night, you have an even btter chance of an upgrade, but if you are staying a few days, then you can pretty much forget an upgrade to an Exec floor and settle for the free breakfast.

On the subject of upgrades, the Exec floor rooms aside, an offered upgrade may simply be to a quieter higher floor, a corner floor room or a room with a better view and it really does vary from hotel to hotel as to what they will pass off as an upgrade.

As for Exec floors and more importantly the lounges, they again can vary wildly. Some lounges may offer a basic continental breakfast, tea, coffee, nibbles during the day and free local booze with nibbles for two hours in the evening and others like the likes of the Abu Dhabi Hilton Exec lounge which although shabby in appearance, offers a good cooked breakfast, excellent nibbles all day, endless canned/bottled soft drinks all day, free wireless all day and a free bar with food from 6-00pm until 11-00pm! :D
