It would benefit all sorts of comparison sites that are directly commercial if the reputation of this one took a battering.

Yes, I think you have a point there, and it would not surprise me I suppose.

However whoever the people are that are waging the anti-Martin campaign, they are making such a pig's breakfast of it in terms of the puerility of their posts and the attitudes expressed, that they surely have no credibility with anyone in possession of a thinking mind.
No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.

I saw Icesave at the top of many a best buy list at a time when my parents were looking for a savings account to deposit their savings. My mother mentioned Icesave after seeing it sitting at the top of the Observer's list.

The only place I read about their compensation scheme was on this site so after I mentioned this they went elsewhere.

I for one am grateful to Martin in the wake of this debacle
  • Great. Success.

I never thought of blaming Martin Lewis for my involvement with Icesave. I locked up my savings with them in January then got panicked in the spring when the Icelandic Krona was attacked, tried to withdraw some of the locked money on the basis the country was being rocked by hedgefunds exploiting its weakness, and got a very nasty discourteous flea in the ear from Icesave. Felt silly, naif and helpless.

I did think of posting on this site to ask for advice, but I felt such a bally chump for going against Martin's advice never to put more than 35000 eggs in any one basket.

Don't know what all those finance managers in town halls up and down the country thought they were doing though, investing in an economy which has looked dreadful for months. Heads should roll, certainly, if they don't squeeze the money out of Iceland. 'Every man for himself' indeed, said the Icelandic PM. Disgraceful. String him up.

Meanwhile I am just feeling gratitude that I'll get my cash back. Don't know how I'd ever have accommodated to the loss. Now we can all wait patiently for our cheques, then reinvest much more wisely.

  • This is the first time I've watched the recording of Martin on C4 (link in OP) and I have to say, I thought Martin handled it reasonably well. Okay, people have picked up that he used the word 'dodgy'; however apart from that, I can't see what all of the fuss is about.

When I've been reading some of the posts on this forum, I thought it was likely that he made a pigs ear of the interview, but in the difficult circumstances, I thought it was pretty good.

I wish MSE had a better way of vetting IDs / registrations.

I have already suggested that to the forum team. There is obviously multiple registrations taking place. Dead easy to resolve for the admin team is to check the I.P address of members

I can't prove it, but I have a nagging suspicion that some of these trolls who registered as users in the last 5 days are competitors trying to drag everything down

No, not compeitors, just sad little people who like to undermine

Are you a banker? You never seem to answer the question despite being asked by many posters in many threads who are convinced you are indeed a big banker.

I thought Martin looked upset. I thought about putting some savings in there but I didn't know enough about it so I didn't. Glad I didn't now. But I certainly don't think Martin is to blame. He can only give advice and in these awful circumstances anything can happen.. His advice has saved me a few quid and I thank him for that..

I think the arguments have already been levied if you had taken the trouble to read them yesterday, or prior. Basically everyone has to use their own common sense and judgment in deciding what to do with their money. After Northern Rock there was plenty of reason to be cautious and plenty of information around that foreign based banks, and Iceland in particular, could be dodgy. If people were not aware of that, or chose to ignore it, or thought that one solitary website could be taken as gospel about all such matters and that they didn't have to use any savvy, or to take any responsibility for their own actions, then yes I'm afraid idiotic is the word that springs to mind.
