Aren't posts like this just a little bit sad and pathetic? (And yes, I got suckered by Icesave too).
Be angry at the Icelandic banks, the Icelandic government, the Icelandic PM. Fine, all perfectly understandable. But the entire Icelandic nation of ordinary citizens? Err, no.
It's a beautiful country, and Icelanders are on the whole fantastic people. I speak from experience. I can only feel sympathy for them right now.mybrainhurts wrote: »Actually I feel quite sorry for most of them. I decided to bank with Icesave. They didn't decide to be Icelandic. They need to get rid of their creepy PM tho.
I'm glad you added that bit though. :rolleyes:0 -
Agreed, talana.
I don't go in for this xenophobic nonsense, the only people you will be hurting are the Icelandic people themselves (and I was a saver in Icesave)
In fact, this whole incident has reminded me that I really would like a holiday in Iceland sometime soon!0 -
1. I had a number of accounts with Norhtern Rock and didnt panic and draw all my money out, i didnt draw any out! If people panic, it makes things worseSo people who went for a better rate of interest deserve to lose their money? I don't think you would be saying that if you had money in there (for the record I don't either).
It was a UK subsidiary protected by the FSCS. All they were doing was making their money work harder. How many 'British' banks are solely 'British' anymore? Also did you miss the problems with NR, B+B and HBOS?
Financially savvy perhaps? Just going for a better deal does not mean you deserve to be screwed over.
.2. I didnt put my money there because of the obvious risks. they are a foreign bank. look, how many uk branches have they got? for example, sandander, they are foreign, but they have UK branches. the banks in question are internet banks with no UK branches. you say they were covered by our FCSC but the banks' viability arent controlled/determined by the UK economy. Think about it, the UK Government can (and always has been able to/will do in future) support the banks in time of need. Its all about opinion, but my attitude to risk is very low, clearly investors had higher risk thresholds.
3.Yes, very savvy to invest in a bank that is on the internet. I dont trust these accounts, i prefer a bank book/card at the minimum, and the face to face customer service. The risks were there for everyone to see, as somebody else said.0 -
For goodness sake this is a good humoured thread. I really don't think anyone seriously wants to bomb them. Stop being so serious and let us make ourselves a little happier with some banter. It's the British way!0

I agree, instead of blaming the people of Iceland, lets just blame it on Kerry Katona. pmslFor goodness sake this is a good humoured thread. I really don't think anyone seriously wants to bomb them. I think talana must be Icelandic!!0 -
We should accuse them of having WMDs and harbouring terrorists as a pretext for invasion. We can then finance the treasury bailout with fish stocks.0

Apparently the supermarket chain Iceland, the toy retailer Hamleys, the jewellery chain Goldsmiths, fashion chains Whistles and Jane Norman, fashion company Mosaic Fashions, UK department store chain, House of Fraser are all owned by the Icelandic Baugur Group,0 -
Reykjavik, Iceland: Producers of the hit children's TV programme Lazytown, which is produced in Iceland, have retaliated over the UK Governments plans to sue Iceland's government, after the collapse of its number 2 bank Icesave which left thousands of UK savers in limbo.
Spokesman Sportacus said "If the UK wantz a war then we'll give em one. We are going to ban Lazytown from being shown on UK channelz az of today. No more sportz candy, no more good intentionz or healthy eating messages, no more Stephanie or Robbie Rotten."
Robbie Rotten, the villain of the series, also chipped in "Muhahahahaha the UK can go screw itself."
Stephanie was less than impressed though and said in a squeaky voice "Aawwww why can't we just be friends"
Puppet, Mayor Milford, organised a protest through Lazytown holding placards and banners & burning the UK flag.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown retaliated after the shock announcement today with tit for tat threats of cancelling Blue Peter which is shown to Icelandic viewers.
