For the original op's problems ,

I had this problem and i found out the problem was the firewall , i use zonealarm and a pop up would pop out when i clicked update , make sure you always accept it . If you deny it it will come with your message.

So , in future just try disabling / turning off your firewall while it is updating and hopefully that should work

    Hope this helps :)

Don't be silly! Try learning how to configure your firewall to allow this program to have access to the net. Telling someone to disable or turn off their firewall is bad advice.

  • I have a message coming up when I try to update my AVG. It says 'Invalid Update Control CTF File'. Anyone know what that means and how I can fix it?

Don't really understand why it's just come up in the past few days, what could have changed to affect it?

    Any advice anyone?

I had this for a few days towards the end of last week.
I got fed up of it so I uninstalled AVG free then downloaded and installed it again from Filehippo.

    I've had no further problem.
  • I found the answer here: http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/error-invalid-update-control-ctf-file-when-updating-avg-anti-virus-80/.

I downloaded the 'script to automate task' and it worked fine. It only took seconds.
  • I have also had this problem with AVG. Followed the instructions in the link above and now works fine.
