I will be out of pocket by at least 3K as a result of this and I expect to be compensated - I m not a troll but a senior creditor to Icsave (which is fully regulated by the FSCS)

I was within the 35K protection limit - How are they allowed to do this>?

Whilst I can certainly sympathise with someone losing 3K (that being nearly as much as my entire savings), who exactly do you think is going to compensate you?

At the moment the government looks like its going to have to step in to help you out, and that effectively means me and other taxpayers. The government are not obliged to do this.

As I say - I really do sympathise but the fact that the UK government is having to intervene should indicate the gravity of the situation - you very nearly lost everything!

    Best Regards

    Simon

The British Taxpayer has just signed a blank cheque to bail out a bunch of reckless bankers.

And people on here are complaining that some savers might get the interest they're entitled to?

If everyone had had the attitude of Icesavers - i.e. Save rather than borrow money you can't afford to pay back - we wouldn't be in this mess in the first place. Icesavers .... any savers ...... are the last people who should be getting a hard time

ICESAVE savers are tax payers too! - Jeeeez:rolleyes:

The UK compensation system meant that we were ultimately covered anyway, the same as any other bank allowed to take savers money in the UK. I've paid more than my fair share of taxes over the years that's for sure; and we icesavers deserve to be looked after.

    Gold's up too - nice one!:D

  • To be frank, I am happy as long as I can get my capital back

yeah cause we dont pay any tax do we.. go complain about the councils instead. hey they may put your council tax up now that will cheer you up even more
  • Just heard Martin Lewis on "It pays to watch", say that ICESAVE savers may NOT receive interest earned, that hasn't been paid to accounts. For example ISA's with annual interest (I have one:mad: ), and presumably fixed rate bonds too.

If this turns out to be true, then I hope ICELAND sinks.

    INSERT BY MARTIN 9 October

Thankfully my assumption was over-cautious, we're now getting indications interest will be paid up to the 7 october. It seems (thankfully) the goernment is very deteremined to ensure not a penny of savers money will be lost.

Thank you Martin - You are a star.:T This web site is fantastic, and I for one would be lost without it. Don't pay any attention to all these nasty comments on here - You are a true HERO! - KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT WORK (I really mean this):money:

  • There you go ........ Even Martin (Yes, the man himself!) is happy we will not loose out.:money:

    Cheers Martin.:T

Although i understand why some people would be upset at losing a little interest , i must admit that i am very, very relieved that out goverment has taken such a strong stance against iceland and when i get my money back i'll not care a jot about any interest , still each to there own .

    Hi Happy Saver,
The way you quoted my message it looked like you were disagreeing with me, but I think we were saying the same thing: relief at getting our capital back when it seemed that the "guarantee" wasn't quite what it seemed to be. Any interest of course would be welcomed, but personally I would see it very much as a bonus. (Not that I don't want it of course.....)

I am not greedy for wanting my interest up to the point when the bank went insolvent. It is money owed to me. If your employer elected not to pay you for work done then you would not be happy about it - what's the difference?

The difference is that you could take action against your employer as you could Iceland for the first 16K they owe. The tax payer wouldn't pay your wages from your employer, yet they are for your bad financial decision. Can you really not see that difference?
