Time to Boycott Iceland??

  • Love this quote from LibDem Treasury spokesman Lord Oakeshot:
He said: 'Iceland is a financial banana republic - perhaps we should call it a fishing republic.
'If its prime minister wore dark glasses and spoke Spanish, they never would have been able to run up these vast debts.'

The uk government need to sieze assets owned by icesave or it's parent companies based in the uk.

Then sell these to investors to pay the savers back who have been stitched up by Iceland/icesave.

If there's one thing that you can rely on, even if these torrid times, it's British people acting without thinking.

Yes great, boycott those companies, cause even more British unemployment at this time.

I'm no expert, but if the money people would have spent there is spent elsewhere, does that not mean that those other companies expand, taking on the staff from the boycotted Icelandic-owned companies? There will be some distress, obviously, since people can't change jobs a tiny amount at a time, but ultimately the same money would be spent in shops, requiring the same staff etc., but the companies wouldn't be sending any profits to Iceland.

Can you imagine how many British jobs would be lost of all those companies you mentioned laid off even a quarter of their shop staff
Bravo. You are a true patriot.
When the disgraceful Iceland Government dishonored their bank depositors, can you imagine how the Iceland companies not to dishonor the salary of their employees?

Bravo. You are giving Iceland more opportunities to default!
    Vodafone sucks.

Why can't the UK invoke its own "emergency laws" and simply take ownership of any Icelandic investments in the UK? e.g. any Icelandic stakes in a UK company become possession of the government and offset the compensation that Iceland has wriggled out of. This is financial war.

Hmmm. And she was declared bankrupt recently. I see a pattern emerging. . .

    Maybe this is the reason:

When asked why Russia, and not a closer ally, was coming to Iceland’s aid, Haarde said: “We have not received the kind of support that we were requesting from our friends. So in a situation like that, one has to look for new friends.”
The Prime Minister went on to stress that he remains happy with the support Iceland has received from its Nordic neighbours, but would not be drawn on which countries and central banks he was disappointed with. It is perhaps fair to assume that the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and the European Central Bank are the targets of his anger.

When Haarde made that announcement yesterday, my immediate thought was that Brown had told the Icelanders to get lost. It later dawned on me that he may well directly bail the UK savers. Why would any UK government hand more money over for the Icelanders to divvy up at will?
They are a failed state basically.

My attention span drifted too early, thanks. But still, not sure a boycott of Iceland is going to be a great help to anyone.
