The £35k limit was in existence at the time. People either chose to ignore it or didn't know about it.
Either way they have no learning experience as the good ol' tax payer will bail them out. Should have let those with over £50k lose it. More fool them.
I saw an old woman on the television with all her savings in Icesave. Have a heart. But I agree he should make it very clear it won't happen again. Anybody investing in future should be forced to seek independent advice or receive a leaflet with letters 4 inches tall. THIS IS NOT COVERED.

If the Icelandic government do indeed renege on their obligations they should boot all of their banks out of the UK.
After relieving them of any assets they might still have.Je suis Charlie.0 -
My own personal position was well under the 35k limit (around 5.7k, which I started moving all bar £100 out via BACS on friday evening, no sign yet). When I started saving with Icesave I was well aware of the passport system for the 1st chunk believing Iceland wouldn't/couldn't !!!! it up. People blaming Martin are complete !!!!!!, and the UK government should persue Iceland for all the assests in this country to reclaim the money the taxpayers are going to have to stump up.
I recently got done over with Zoom collapse for a honeymoon 2 days before we were due to fly, so this would have been a fantastic year :T. My partner and I actually considered going to Iceland next year but I'll be considering that now they've stolen 4.5bn.0 -
I'm breathing a huge sigh of relief today for all of us.
I'm thankful that Darling and dare I say it Brown have stepped in quickly and not left us dangling.
From now on I will boycott all Icelandic products.0 -

Have a heart my @rse.
For those who genuinely didn't know about the £35k limit, I feel sorry for them. Sorry for them in that they don't have enough sense to look into stuff before sending out large sums of money. I suspect these are the people who send money to Nigeria to release "lottery money" they have won.
For those who knew all about it, the vast majority I'm sure, but preferred not to think about it so that they could get the highest rate - tough.0 -
Liquidity is when you look at your investment portfolio and **** your pants0

Presumably as well as owning 10 British banks the British taxpayer now owns Hamleys and all the other high-street stores formerly in Icelandic hands? And if not why not?Je suis Charlie.0

Today was the first time I've applauded a politician. not becasue I have more then 50,000 with Icesave. but because AD has promised savers money and will not let Iceland get away with it. Thats what I call looking after your citizens.
Well done AD. :T0 -

Well we all have our views. I guess (I hope) yours isn't the majority one. My hope is we live in a country were the elderly are looked after. Why not throw the old woman out of her house. Set up a soup kitchen down the street.
