    Full announcement later. He has just been live on BBC. He was asked about the 50k cap and he has said it will not allow UK customers to lose out.

    Anyone got a link to that? I heard that from somebody that heard him on the Today programme, but would like to see something more official!

    They also said that they'd heard Iceland was saying the 'cupboards were bare' and that they couldn't pay the compensation, which is why Darling has said he'll guarantee it.

    He was furious with the Icelandic government......he said they told him they have no money in their gaurantee scheme. They will be 'pursued' for failing to meet their 'obligations'!

    Just as I expected.

    AD can't let "savers" lose their money if he will help out idiot bankers who have taken big risks or made stupid loans.

    Good news for 300,000 people this morning.

    By the way those who had more than £50k should think themselves lucky and learn from this when finding a new home for their cash.
    It's far better to be penny wise than pound foolish.

    I'll see if I can find a link. But yes you are right he did say that he had spoken to the PM of Iceland and no money will be made available - hence the reason 100% guarantee by UK.

    A step too far then. If they're going to cover 100% of all savings then say so, otherwise you introduce uncertainty.

    Still, good news for people here. Can't believe that the Iceland compensation scheme is going to default.
