Just to clear up any confusion, PC3200 is backward compatible with 2700, so even if you mix modules, they will just tend to both run at the slower speed (not that you'd really notice the difference anyways). If in doubt, go for the faster 1GB stick, crucial Part #: CT12864Z40B. Same price as the slower stick, free delivery, and 7% quidco cashback. You'll see a difference in performance as soon as you fit it, and by the time you've finished cleaning up your system too, you'll wonder how you did without for so long......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
Myself for the extra £1, I'd have gone for the 3200.
For what reason? Hoping for a higher resale value when the PC conks out?
It is more likely that the existing module is PC2700 and anyway, there is no benefit in paying more for the PC3200.
It's a little annoying that you confuse the issue with your opinion, but offer no explanation.
As for Gunjack's advice to go for the Crucial RAM, let alone purchase the PC3200, ignore it. There is no reason to purchase PC3200 if the PC2700 is available and little or no reason to pay Crucial the extra cash, as mentioned before.
Maybe some needs reminding that this is a MoneySaving website. :rolleyes:0 -
Donnie - the crucial 1GB sticks were the same price for 2700 and 3200 with free delivery and 7% quidco cashback making it under £16, so don't quite get the "extra cash" comes from, or are you on about getting a 512MB 2700 stick?? From experience, I'd have gone for 1.25/1.5 GB rather than .75 GB, to ensure the OP gets the performance kick needed with a bit in reserve, if you like.
p.s. the crucial is also a guaranteed match to your mobo, some other makes may or may not be compatable. If you have issues you can return it no quibbles.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Am I missing something? How does the Crucial UK price of 21.14 suddenly metamorphisise into "under £16"? Even with the discount and "free delivery" it is nearly 20 pounds.
"Guaranteed match to your mobo". Yes, that service is for people who have no knowledge of these things. That's why the come here for expert advice and to save money.
Even after waiting an age to get your 1.47 from Quidco, the Crucial memory is still nearly five pounds more expensive than play.com.
Play.com £14.99 Free Delivery
Where on earth have you come up with the 512MB RAM argument? None of my links point to a 512MB module.
Is this the 'confuse' the OP week' on Moneysavingexpert?0 -
Donnie, okay, so I was talking ex-VAT, my mistake, so circa £18.50-ish.
The 512 MB comes from loaner's post referring to negligible performance improvement for XP over 0.75GB, so I assumed at the price you quoted, you meant getting a 512MB stick rather than a 1GB stick. Apologies for getting comments and prices mixed up. I checked the OP's mobo on crucial, and the 512MB comes in at £13, hence the mixup.
Someone questioned having 191MB RAM earlier...easy, 256MB with 64MB shared with the graphics chipset.
There's really no need to be sarcastic when people are trying to help, it's just hard to keep up when deprived of sleep......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

That's a fair amount of rambling there...
21.14 minus 7% equals 19.66. Not quite 18.50ish as you put it.0 -
The crucial 1 GB, Part #: CT12864Z40B • DDR PC3200 • CL=3 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR400 • 2.6V •
is £19.96 inc VAT, minus 7% equals £18.56
surely that's close enough ??......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

:rolleyes::rolleyes: Here you are have some of your sarcastic rolleyes back!
Well considering my trade is PC related for the last 20 years, I'd say I have a great idea of what I am on about.
It might be in future that want to add another 1Gb when they get the money.
However the main point was, if there is little in the cost then it is always wiser if the board can take it to have the faster RAM even if you run it slower as it is designed to run faster and therefore you are not running it close to it's spec, so less likely to have memory issues.
yes, MSE is about saving money, but when there's just £1 in it and it makes sense to go for the faster RAM then saving £1 is not money saving as such, if the items were identical, then yes.
I haven't the slightest idea of the point of your post.
The OP almost certainly has PC2700 onboard. I can't see how purchasing a PC2700 module now will impact on them purchasing another 1GB module in the future.
The PC is designed to run with PC2700. Memory issues? Please....
Faster RAM? It won't be. You will simply have a mismatched pair onboard.0
