Assuming this isn't a wind up, I think you'll find they have very little left over to consider your car hire cost request.Long story, but i have got (had??) money in icesave account, i can't get the !!!!er out of there to transfer to my current a/c, they are saying no money allowed out. I need the money now or i am without a car. Can i claim car hire charges off them because i can't buy a car with MY money???
Additionally, they will need to stop laughing at the funniest request they will consider during a torrid time for staff and customers.0 -

Ok please can everyone calm down. The smug ones with the "I told you so attitudes" aren't really helping. A lot of people are truly worried about this, myself and the wife included as we have a chunk in an Icesave account. On the flip side of that, calling people names and getting irate does nothing either. So why do this? I don't understand it. I thought we were here to help each other here.
The facts are all Icesave accounts are frozen ('scuse the pun - it was not intended). No money is going anywhere wether that's in or out for the forseeable future. The official stance is 3 months.
Thomas99,
Sadly there is no way to get your hands on your cash to buy the motor you need. Perhaps you can get a cheap runabout for the interim 3-6 months until this is sorted out? I say 3-6 months as I think the official stance is a tad optimistic and it may take a bit longer.

Am I missing something, what's greedy about having savings in a bank?
The current financial mess has been caused by irresponsible lending not saving for when it's needed.0 -

How clueless you are. Greed? You obviously have no idea how bankers/shareholders/brokers/insurance companies work. Normal people who put their money in an Icesave ISA because it offered the best rate are clearly not greedy, just doing the responsible thing. After all, they are not swindling any one, taking advantage of anyone else's misfortunes or playing the system. Banks are historically a safe place to put your money.
Yes, it is true that we all have responsibility for making these choices, and I guess it was a bad choice to put money in Icesave. Hindsight is a great thing. Don't you ever make mistakes?
These kinds of uneducated remarks are an embarrassment to the human race.0 -

It's not the OP's greed, it's the greed of the banks who have taken his money and spent it recklessly. The OP cannot take personal responsibility for the bank's mistakes. Unlike investments, people don't put money into deposit accounts expecting to 'get back less than they put in'. (And yes, I do have savings in Icesave, though unlike the OP, I can live without them for the moment (forever, in fact, if I have to)). What is greedy about wanting to save up and be self-reliant, as opposed to taking money from the state? It's a sad, sad thing that people who have saved up to support themselves are ultimately criticised for being greedy.
I sincerely hope that you do not find yourself in the situation of the OP - not only lacking access to your money when you really need it, but then finding yourself blamed by outsiders for having been 'greedy' with 'no thought for the consequences'.
To the OP: unfortunately, Icesave have a clause in their T&Cs which states that they can temporarily suspend access to withdrawals/deposits for up to 60 days in situations where liquidity needs to be re-established. It does also appear that we are being treated as somewhat 'second-class savers' by the Icelandic government (despite the fact that it's highly likely that British savers make up a larger proportion of Landsbanki's deposit base than Icelandic savers) in that Landsbanki itself is still operating as normal - and are receiving 100% protection for their deposits - whereas we are not. It is an unfortunate situation but we will just have to see what comes of the next few days and weeks. In the meantime, you may have to look into alternative sources of funds.

Yes, those greedy b*st*rds who put their money in a savings account have really got what they deserved.
Only on an internet forum could someone who is concerned about losing their savings, through no fault of their own, get slagged off by someone for being 'greedy'.
OP: you have my sympathy, but as others have said I think this money will be stuck in the system for a while and they will be in no position to compensate any expenses. Do you have any family members who could help you out in the short term?0
