Getting a council house! is it possible anymore?

perhaps the poster means penalised by the benefit trap? This is a genuine problem that the gov't refuses to address - trying to come off benefits is very hard when all benefits are lost simultaneously as soon as you start earning.
Read their post again. "I am not a Daily Mail reader by any means however I do think that the original poster quite rightly feels cheated and short changed by a government that refuses to help genuine people who are penalised for going out to work." The implication seems to be that people are penalised for going to work, no mention of the benefits trap or anything similar to it.0 -

I am not stupid enough to be against 'government handouts'. I have a problem with do- gooders forever championing social spongers. There are genuine people in need - of course there is, however come over to the estate sometime and see the 08 cars, plasmas, macs and the barbados holiday and then tell me its wrong to feel cheated in some way.
Sorry OP i know this thread was not about politics but I just cannot understand why people are outraged
"Do-gooders" don't champion "social spongers". Why would they? And sorry, but I refuse to believe that anyone on benefits could afford the stuff you're talking about. No way. Do you even know that the people on the "estate" are on benefits, bearing in mind that many council houses have been bought up and sold on to other people? Do you actually personally know any of these people? If you know that these people ARE on benefits and DO have all these things, why have you not contacted the anonymous benefit fraud line to report them, as there's no way a family on Income Support or whatever could possibly afford a holiday in Barbados!0 -
yes I do know them personally. They are cheating the system. I understand what you are saying about the fraud line but its not as simple as that when you have to live here and deal with consequences.
My point is that some people are in genuine need and rightly deserve help. But there are abusers of the system that deny people such as the OP with some assistance.0 -
What the OP and other people who'd like a cheaper rent should do is complain to their MPs about the high levels of rents in the private sector.
The council housing waiting lists are piled high with people who would love a lower rent and security of tenure. It's appalling that these people are so ignored by politicians.0 -

It's anonymous, and if you know of someone cheating the system and don't want to do anything about it then as far as I'm concerned you lose all right to complain about it, as you can be seen not to care enough to actually do something about it.
You don't even have to make a phone call: https://secure.dwp.gov.uk/benefitfraud/0 -

I do think it's wrong that single people are living in 3 bed houses, memories or not....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Grimbo, I agree it is unfair that council homes are out of reach for most people. Unless you're a single mother or an asylum seeker, you're unlikely to get a home given to you.
Asylum seekers do not go into normal council housing....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
If you are earning £21k a year, and paying £7.8k a year in rent, you should have more than £50 a month left over after bills. Perhaps pop onto the debt free wannabe board here on MSE?...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0
